CHAPTER FIFTEEN!
❝ GAOLING ❞
[Y/N] LEANED AGAINST the exterior of the store, arms folded in front of her chest trying to tune out Sokka's indecisiveness. Her short time with the Avatar proved to be more reckless than she expected. With danger around every corner, they hadn't stayed in any place for long and [Y/N] was completely fine with that.
She closed her eyes, letting the sounds of the Earth Kingdom town they'd rested in drift through one ear and out the other. Once again, she swallowed the small bit of guilt that formed ever since she'd joined the group.
They were nice—too nice, in her opinion, and younger than her. They'd never questioned her too much about anything. Though she had the advantage of being to their aid twice before, she couldn't help but shake the feeling that deep down she was using them for her own gain. Admittedly, defeating the Fire Lord wasn't on her to-do list, but helping him wasn't on it either.
The sound of her name being called brought her back into reality. Sokka, still hovering over the bag on display, placed his hands on his hips.
"Can you use your magicky powers to see if buying this bag is worth it in the future?" He asked.
She blinked. "Yeah, I just got a vision of you buying the bag last night, then I took it," she pushed herself off the store, "and burnt it. My powers don't work on command," she said, "if you want it so much, get it."
She walked down the small steps, leaving him alone to his decision. Immediately, a man with a stack of flyers approaches her. Without glancing at it, she waves her hand.
"No, thanks."
Master Yu's Earthbending Academy felt too easy in [Y/N]'s mind. The great Avatar she'd heard others speak so highly of needs an earthbending teacher, so he enrolls in a random earthbending school? It's no wonder the free class exposed it as a total bust and a waste of time and money.
That's how they found themselves at an earthbending tournament with an optimistic Aang hoping to find his teacher there. Though with the huge rock that smashed into the empty seat to [Y/N]'s right and Sokka's yelling to her left, she was starting to think the town wasn't home to any normal benders.
And she was proven correct as they stood in front of the Beifong estate—belonging to the richest family in Gaoling, probably one of many in the world. It's a desperate attempt for Aang to talk to the earthbender he'd met the night before, but what else is new?
The gate keeping the four of them from entering the grounds adorned a crest with a winged boar. She was tough, refusing to teach Aang but the Avatar had another plan. Rather than sneaking in through the gate, entering through the front door was much easier.
A servant led them through the large house. It was open and bright, the opposite of the home [Y/N]'d seen in her memories. But, the portrait of a family without a daughter made the walls shrink around her.
Lao and Poppy Beifong insisted they'd stay for dinner along with Toph and her instructor. [Y/N] sat next to Katara picking at her food. A servant drops a bowl of soup in front of Toph.
"Blow on it for her," Lao ordered.
"Allow me," Aang said, sending a small tornado at the cup. Everyone clapped.
"Avatar Aang, it's an honor to have you visit us." Poppy said.
"In your opinion, how much longer do you think the war will last?" Lao asked.
