I seem to consistently forget to present the gift to him.
"Ermanno," I whispered, and he responded with a hum.
"I'm always forgetting to give you your birthday presents. I left them in the car. Can you give me your keys so that I can get them?" I inquired.
"Sure. The keys are on the counter," he responded.
He sat up, and I got to my feet.
I made my way to the counter, grabbed the keys, and before leaving, I asked, "Is it the usual car?"
He's always switching cars.
"Yeah, it's the same one, sweetheart," he answered.
I headed towards the front door and slipped on some sliders.
After unlocking the car, I circled around it and popped open the trunk.
To my relief, the bags were untouched, just as I had left them.
I swiftly grabbed them, closed the trunk, and hurried back inside the house, making sure to lock the car due to the chilly weather.
Closing the door behind me, I returned the keys to their original spot.
He sat up with a smile as I walked in.
"You didn't have to do that," he grinned as I took a seat beside him.
"Of course I did," I grinned back, placing the bag in front of him.
Before opening it, he planted a kiss on my lips and embraced me.
"Go ahead and open it," I said, pulling back slightly.
He removed the wrapping paper from the emerald gift bag, matching the color of his eyes.
As he unveiled the Rolex box, I couldn't help but wish to witness that smile every single day.
That particular, infectious smile.
He opened the box and discovered the watch, along with a small chain, setting it down.
"Sweetheart, you're struggling," he said with concern. "Please don't tell me you spent all your money on this?"
I smiled and reassured him, "I didn't."
