The bright British sun was glaring down already and the early morning traffic was moving along at an incredibly slow pace. The windows were rolled down and the fresh air hit Harriet King like a slap around the face. She was definitely awake now. The heat combined with the stressful journey had made her want to turn around and go home, but duty called this morning. In fact, it had been her partner Detective Jason Murray to give her a wake-up call this morning and ruin Harriet's lovely dream about winning the lottery and buying her own boat.

Jason Murray had been Harriet's partner for about four years and they got on so well together. Jason was a bit of a flirt but he also knew how to just relax and have a laugh – something Harriet wasn't interested in until they were working together. He made the days seem bearable. Jason wasn't a bad looking bit of eye candy either. He was about six foot three tall, nearly a whole foot above Harriet herself, and donned a mop of dark brown hair which, if you caught it in the right light, would glisten with a few strands of gold. Jason was usually well-shaven but Harriet liked it when he had a bit of stubble across his chiselled jawline and cheeks. The most enticing thing about Jason was his eyes. He had deep green eyes, with a ring of hazel around the outside. Oh, Harriet could look into his eyes for hours without getting bored.

Harriet finally managed to squeeze out of the traffic and pull into the stations car park. She gathered her bag, after checking her reflection one last time in the car's interior mirror and strode into the station. She nodded a hello to the receptionist and used her ID card to buzz herself into the back of the station. She trudged up the stairs to the first floor and made a beeline for her office she shared with Jason.

Jason was already in, and was up to his eyeballs in paperwork. He hadn't noticed Harriet yet, so she slammed the door shut behind her and he jumped, his eyes narrowing as he looked up to her.

"Good morning Jason." Harriet grinned as she placed her bag down by the side of her desk.

"It is a morning but I don't think it's going to be a good one." He replied, hissing in frustration as he caught a paper cut from his files.

"What's happened?" Harriet sat down at her desk and switched on her computer. It was just gone eight in the morning and she already had countless emails to attend to. "Must be something bad if you had to wake me up to come in."

"Actually, Captain wanted you to come in early for a briefing." Jason sighed and shuffled a few more papers to one side. He then looked up to Harriet's face. The familiar sight of his eyes still gave her butterflies and she prayed to all the Gods that she wasn't blushing. She nodded in reply and started clicking through her work emails.

"There's been another murder Harriet." She stopped and turned her attention back to Jason, his eyes had never left her. "Another case Captain wants the dynamic duo to solve." He pointed from himself to Harriet, a grin ever so lightly gracing his lips.

"We're used to murders though Jason, we work in the homicide department." Harriet waved her fingers over her name sign on the desk, DETECTIVE HARRIET KING, HOMICIDE. Jason let out a little laugh and shook his head.

"I can read Detective King. No need to be so sarcastic." He stood up and walked over the Harriet's desk. He then proceeded to sit on the edge of the desk and play with a stray pen. "There's a bad feeling about this case. Captain wants us in his office as soon as you're ready."

The walk up to the Captain's office seemed to take forever. His office is on the third floor, situated towards the front of the building, so it gets amazing views of the town centre and the large park just off to the right of the station. Harriet would love to have an office like the Captain, but it was just a dream. Right now, she had to work and earn that office on the third floor.
