So, what should be done?

Su Bai rubbed his forehead and decided to focus his explanation to Qiu Wen on "speed distribution." He also started calculating how to provide Qiu Wen with concise and clear explanations about pacing in his mind.

By Su Bai's side, neither the assistant coach, Zhao Heping, nor Qiu Wen spoke to disrupt Su Bai's thoughts.

From the moment Su Bai started reading through the training records, Qiu Wen understood that Su Bai would be the one providing overall tactical guidance before his test.

Qiu Wen didn't harbor any dissatisfaction due to Su Bai not being an official coach. After all, it was Su Bai who had pointed out his potential for the 400-meter distance earlier that morning in the coach's office.

Everyone waited silently for Su Bai's train of thought. Under Zhao Heping's instruction, the assistant coach had found the only two 400-meter runners in the team and signaled for them to warm up, as they would later participate in an impromptu test race.

After several minutes of uninterrupted contemplation, Su Bai finally snapped out of his thoughtful state. He turned to Qiu Wen and led him to the side of the track, then looked back at his mentor, Zhao Heping.

"Master, can the equipment on the track be used normally for the upcoming test?" Su Bai inquired.

Equipment on the track?

Zhao Heping raised an eyebrow and then chuckled, "Yes."

Hearing this response, Su Bai's eyes lit up, and he pointed to a relatively inconspicuous device by the track, "Can the split timer be used as well?"

Su Bai's question brought a smile to Zhao Heping's face. He hadn't expected Su Bai to come up with this idea. The split timer could be set to beep at specified intervals, allowing athletes to have a clearer and more accurate sense of whether their current speed and pace were correct during interval training.

For Qiu Wen, who hadn't undergone specialized training for the 400-meter event, having split timing prompts could indeed help him better understand if his pace was accurate.

Of course, this didn't necessarily mean strictly adhering to the signals of the split timer would guarantee success. It might also affect Qiu Wen's natural rhythm and overall performance, potentially leading to a breakdown in his results.

However, since Zhao Heping had entrusted Su Bai with Qiu Wen's initial training guidance, he didn't say anything more and stood to the side, observing carefully to see how Su Bai would handle the current situation.

In the following time, Su Bai had Qiu Wen repeatedly run 8 sets of 100-meter trial runs and recorded the test data for each of those 8 runs. Finally, he gave Qiu Wen a 20-minute break. During this break, Su Bai briefly explained the key elements of the 400-meter run to Qiu Wen and the pace arrangement he had prepared for him.

"Don't mind the other two athletes around you. You haven't undergone specialized training, and your pace won't be the same as theirs. Don't let them set the pace for you. Remember your state during the 200-meter run. In the first half of the race, maintain the pace you usually do in your full training for the 200 meters. After you hear the signal from the first split timer, you can relax a bit. After the second signal, go into a full sprint."

Su Bai didn't use terms like "which hundred-meter split" to explain the details Qiu Wen needed to focus on. Instead, he directly used Qiu Wen's experience in specialized 200-meter training and the two signal cues as the key dividing points for the entire 400-meter race.

After explaining these key points, Su Bai straightforwardly instructed Qiu Wen to pay attention to his stride rate and stride length control. He made sure Qiu Wen understood what he needed to focus on.
