1am. It wasn't exactly the time you wished you were getting home at, but unfortunately that's the exact time that was displayed on the clock when you finally closed your apartment door behind you.

You'd had a very, very bad shift at the hospital and all you wanted was to curl up into bed next to Brian, who you knew would already be asleep when you entered your bedroom. You could hear his gentle snores as he lay peacefully on his side of the bed, your pyjama top held loosely in his hand that sat atop your pillow.

You always hated night shifts as they meant you barely got to see him. The only time you appreciated them was the days he was on shift, otherwise you much preferred the early morning shift as that way you'd get home just in time to see Brian wake up. But instead you had to come home to see him sleeping, and as much as you needed him right now. Needed him to hold you and simply comfort you after what you'd been through today, you didn't have the heart to wake him up.

Gently, you lifted your pyjama top from beneath his fingers, throwing it over you before you even more gently lifted his hand. You couldn't help but place a kiss against his knuckles, feeling the coldness of his wedding band that fit perfectly around his finger.

You'd never forget the day he asked you to marry him. You were standing in the middle of the busy emergency room, about to get slammed with patients as you apologised over and over again for having to bail on date night. Again. And instead of getting pissed at you or simply breaking things off because the two of you barely had time to spend together, he asked you to marry him instead.

You couldn't believe your luck that you managed to find such a perfect guy who understood your love for work. Your love for helping people, much like he did during his shift. The two of you were perfect for each other, and while you may go through lengths of time where you didn't see each other much and only had time for a brief phone call just to hear the other's voice, the time you did spend together was magical enough to make up for all of it.

"Hey, baby... You're home." Brian's sleepy voice drifted towards you, pulling you from your thoughts as you simply stood next to the bed with his hand in yours. No wonder you'd woken him up as all the blood had probably drained from his hand that you had suspended in the air.

"Hey." You said softly, smiling as you let go of his hand and began to climb into bed. "Sorry, I didn't mean to wake you."

"S'okay." He mumbled, rubbing his face against the pillow beneath him before his arms wrapped around you as you nuzzled into him. "How was your shift?"

"It was okay." You whispered, kissing him softly on the chest. You couldn't express how heartwarming it was that he wanted to hear about your shift at 1am, after you'd woken him up. Especially when you knew he hated being woke up.

Without meaning to, you slowly felt your lip start to tremble. Your eyes began to sting with tears that you tried to force away by blinking furiously, only one of them managed to escape and before you could wipe it away, it landed atop Brian's chest, sparking concern beneath it when he realised you were crying.

"Baby? What is it? What's the matter?" He asked, now more worried than he was tired. He sat up a little, having to force you upwards as it was like you didn't want him to see your face as you couldn't help but cry. "Y/N, talk to me."

"I'm sorry." You sobbed, feeling as he took your face in his hands, wiping away the tears that streamed down your face. "I just had a really, really bad day."

"You wanna talk about it?" He asked softly, hating how many times he'd had to watch you cry after a long shift. He knew that once you got it all out you'd been fine, but it didn't make it any easier for him to have to see you like this.

"I lost a kid." You choked out, falling against him as you buried your face in the crook of his neck, feeling his arms wrap tightly around you.

"I'm sorry, baby... I know that must have been hard." He whispered, placing a soft kiss to the side of your head as he rubbed comforting circles on your back. "But I'm sure you did all that you could."

"That wasn't enough." You sobbed, your shoulders shaking as you couldn't help but be mad at yourself. "I should have done better."

"Hey, look at me." Brian said sternly, lifting your face to look at him again. "We talked about this... You're an amazing doctor... One who I'm proud to call my wife, but baby, you're not a miracle worker. And I know it's hard when you lose people, but sometimes these things happen, okay? Sweetie, you can't save everyone."

"I know." You sniffled, holding his arms tighter than you'd ever done before. "But it just sucks that I spend all that time away from you only for it to end up being useless."

"It's not useless, baby." He whispered, gently wiping below your eyes. "You gave a family a chance to say goodbye. You gave them a little extra time before their world came crashing down around them... And that's one of the reasons why I love you... Because of how much you're willing to sacrifice just so that you can make others happy."

"I wish I didn't have to be apart from you while I did it." You mumbled, placing quick, messy kisses against his skin as though making up for lost time.

"I know. And I wish I could too but you know I'd only get in the way." He chuckled, making you smile a little as you sniffled. "But hey, how about we take a trip? Just the two of us? Somewhere we can be alone for the entire time?"

"Say more." You said eagerly as you sat up, making him chuckle softly at your quick mood change.

"I'll say more in the morning... How about now we go to sleep?."

"Okay." You nodded, allowing him to lay your head down against him as he held you. "Sorry for waking you up just to cry."

"Don't apologise sweetheart. Don't you ever apologise for that." He whispered, pressing a kiss atop your head before resting his gently on it. "And besides, you know all our best moments seem to happen around 1am these days. So any night you want to wake me up then just to talk, you're more than welcome to do so."
