Her father brought Brooks' seal with him when he came home for lunch. His was made of metal, and carved with a fish. It had been hung on a thin strip of leather for Sage to tie around her neck.

"It's all settled, the Chief even promised Brooks some land to build a house on. I'm very impressed with this boy, Sage, he's been doing well for himself. He has six cows of his own now and his father told me they all started from a sickly calf he was given years ago that no one expected to survive. He nursed it himself."

"Six! I wondered how he'd dare give a cow away when he's planning to get married. Did the Chief say anything about that?"

"Only that he's free to make whatever offers he sees fit. He mentioned that his wife is fond of you, Sage, and he's looking forward to meeting you officially himself."

Sage was studying the seal. It really was happening now, she was engaged. Brooks would build a house and they would be married around this time next year. She'd have to spend time with him, and his family too, and everyone would know and ask her questions. She'd have to make some new clothes, and get dishes and household things, but where would the money for that come from? Everything she owned was shabby or damaged, and Brooks would see it. He would probably come to visit her too and sit here in this room, he would see how different it was to the home he lived in. She wouldn't be able to distract him from it either because she didn't know how she'd ever be brave enough to speak to him now, not when -

Her mother put a hand on her shoulder and she looked up.

"It's just one day at a time." she told her. "Can I tie that for you?"
