Bea's POV

The living room felt like a vacuum, sucking in every bit of noise and leaving us all sitting in an uncomfortably loud silence. It was as if all the witty banter and laughter that usually flowed effortlessly between us had been abruptly switched off, leaving us in a state of quietness.

If there was an award for the most awkward silence in the history of friend gatherings, we would have certainly been strong contenders.

I decided to take matters into my own hands. I cleared my throat, glanced at Josh, and blurted out, "By the way, guys, I'm not actually single."

The room collectively snapped its head towards me, like a bunch of meerkats sensing danger. Josh's eyes widened, and he silently mouthed, "What are you doing, Bea?"

But hey, desperate times call for desperate measures, right? I had to shake things up, inject a little chaos into this painfully silent gathering. So, I embraced my role as the jester of the group and continued, "No, seriously, I have a boyfriend outside of school. His name is Jake."

Ryan's face lit up like a Christmas tree on full blast. "Bea! Why haven't we met this Jake? You've been holding out on us!"

I couldn't resist the temptation to play along, grinning mischievously. "Jake isn't part of our friend group."

Steph and Grace, being the wonderful humans they are, squealed in delight, causing the silence to shatter like a glass jar dropped on a marble floor.

Grace clapped her hands together, saying, "Oh my gosh, Bea, this is amazing news! I'm so happy for you!"

Steph joined in, her excitement contagious. "Bea, spill the details! How did you meet Jake? We need all the juicy gossip!"

Before I could respond, Theo held up his hand, his eyes narrowed with seriousness. "Okay, guys, let's not forget that Josh is sitting right here. How are you feeling about all of this, buddy?"

I couldn't contain my laughter, my voice bubbling with amusement. "Oh, don't worry, Theo. Josh is absolutely fine with it. He's cool as a cucumber."

Josh shot me a look that said, "We're in for a world of trouble later," but I simply giggled in response. The whole situation was a whirlwind of hilarity. Here I was, making up a fictional boyfriend to break the silence, all the while my actual partner-in-crime was right beside me, wondering what the heck was going on.

The tension melted away as laughter filled the room, the once suffocating quiet now replaced by the joyous chaos we so dearly cherished. Everyone started chatting and joking, the energy of the gathering revitalized by my ridiculous revelation.

And in that moment, I realized how truly lucky I was to have these weird, wonderful friends who embraced the absurdity of life with open arms. Even when things got awkward or seemingly complicated, they always found a way to laugh and support each other.

So, as we continued to revel in the hilarity of my made-up boyfriend, Jake, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this wild and wacky friend group. With them, even the most awkward moments could be transformed into comedic gold. And that, my friends, was a treasure worth cherishing.

Josh's POV

I couldn't help but roll my eyes as Bea pouted, pretending to be sad as she asked, "Josh, can we go upstairs and talk? I have something important to tell you."

Oh, joy. The prospect of a serious conversation with Bea was always a treat, especially when she was acting ridiculously playful. Trying to keep my annoyance in check, I followed her upstairs, wondering what on earth she was going to reveal this time.

As we entered the room and I closed the door behind us, Bea started talking. And boy, did she talk. It was like someone had injected her with a megaphone, causing her words to flow at a speed that could rival a race car. It was as if she had suddenly transformed into a motor-mouthed comedian on a caffeine high.

I couldn't help but interrupt, exasperated. "Bea, what on earth is going on? Are you drunk? I thought you only consumed caffeine, not four espresso martinis."

She grinned mischievously, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "Well, Josh, today I thought I'd switch things up a bit. I made myself four espresso martinis, just for fun."

Just for fun? Was she out of her mind? I struggled to keep my cool, attempting to sit her down on the bed to calm her down. But in a classic Bea move, she took my attempt at guiding her as an invitation for mischief. She playfully tried to unzip my trousers, and I couldn't help but hold my head in my hands, exasperation washing over me like a tsunami of irritation.

"Bea, seriously?" I muttered, my voice laced with annoyance. "This is not the time or place for your shenanigans. We need to have a serious conversation."

She pouted, her playful demeanor faltering for a moment as she realized I was genuinely mad. "Someone's mad," she teased, trying to lighten the mood.

I sighed, feeling the weight of the situation pressing on me. "Yes, Bea, I'm mad. You know why? Because I don't want to fuck up our relationship. Keeping it a secret is hard enough, but when you're acting like this, it gets even more complicated."

Silence hung in the air between us as the gravity of my words sank in. Bea's playful expression faded, replaced by a more somber one. Moments like these made me realize just how delicate our hidden relationship was, and how easily a wrong move or a slip of the tongue could send everything crashing down.

She wrapped her arms around me, her voice soft and sincere. "I'm sorry, Josh. I didn't mean to make things complicated. Sometimes, I try to diffuse serious situations with humor, but I forget that it can come across as careless."

I sighed, feeling a mixture of frustration and love for this girl who had a talent for driving me up the wall and then melting my heart in the same breath. "I know, Bea. I know you didn't mean it. But we have to be careful. The more we fuck up or act irresponsibly, the greater the risk of someone finding out."

She nodded, her eyes filled with understanding. "You're right, Josh. I promise I'll be more careful. I don't want anything to jeopardise what we have."
