We arrived home soon after.
The sun was now higher in the sky, and there was more life on the streets.
I unlocked the door, went inside, closed the door after Kayden, kicked my shoes off, and gently placed the cat down on the couch.
I sighed, "I guess we're back to square one again."
"More like square two." He shrugged. "Square one was the process of acquiring the cat."
"Yeah, you're right." I sat down on the floor in front of the couch, my body slightly twisted sideways to face the cat's direction.
"Do you think he's alright? He was already injured..." I trailed off, frowning at the cat.
"Watch his stomach," Kayden said nonchalantly. The way he sat was strangely human.
I furrowed my eyebrows at him, not quite understanding his command.
He rolled his eyes, "To see if he's breathing."
"Oooh! Right." I turned my attention back to the cat.
Its stomach heaved small, shallow breaths.
"He is breathing, but..." I started, my frown returning.
"If he's breathing, then he's fine." Kayden did a shewing motion with his right paw, his left arm resting on his fluffy knee and supporting his head.
"Mr. Kayden, his breathing is really shallow..."
"He will get better."
"But he's also bleeding... I don't think this is the type of breathing a recovering animal would... Well, breathe."
"Telling me every little detail won't make him heal any faster. If you're so worried, just do something about it." he grumbled, speaking as if it were common sense.
Which it was. But...
I hesitated. "Should I take him to the vet?"
"No. Chances are, he's gonna go right back to being feral when he wakes up." He mumbled, seemingly fighting sleep.
His eyes kept drooping, and then snapping back open.
I raised an eyebrow at him.
He continued matter-of-factly, "I don't think they'll be able to tackle a feral cat as well as you, anyway."
His head bobbed and his words slurred.
"Mr... Kayden...?"
"Tackling... Head locks... Cats..." Those were the last words he murmured before drifting off to sleep.
I stared at him in silence.
...
Should I wake him up?
Another moment of silence.
...
I scooted across the floor, over to the side of the couch where Kayden snoozed.
I crossed my arms, propping them on the edge of the couch and resting my head on my forearms.
"Hmmm..." I sighed.
His body was slumped, and his head just barely rested on his paw. He quietly snored, occasionally mumbling something in his sleep.
It was absolutely adorable.
