Shinji arrived at NERV early, hoping to avoid any confrontation with Asuka. He had been dreading coming to work lately, as the constant bickering and fighting with his fellow pilots had been taking a toll on him.

As he walked through the empty hallways, he thought about what Misato had told him the night before. There was going to be a new pilot at NERV, and Shinji couldn't help but hope that it would be a boy. He was tired of being surrounded by girls all day.

He stopped at a convenience store on the way to NERV and grabbed some food for breakfast. He didn't want to risk eating the cafeteria food and having Asuka yell at him for it.

When he finally arrived at NERV, he was surprised to see Kaworu waiting for him in the lobby.

"Shinji!" Kaworu said, his eyes lighting up. "I'm so glad to see you!"

Shinji couldn't help but smile in return. "Kaworu, what are you doing here?"

"I'm the new pilot," Kaworu said, his smile widening.

Shinji's heart leapt at the news. He was going to be working alongside Kaworu, someone he already felt a connection with.

"That's great!" Shinji said. "I was hoping it would be someone I could get along with."

Kaworu nodded. "I feel the same way, Shinji. I was hoping I would be able to make some new friends here."

Shinji took a deep breath, feeling a surge of courage. "Kaworu, can I ask you something?"

"Of course," Kaworu said, his blue eyes sparkling.

"Will you be my friend?" Shinji asked, feeling a little embarrassed.

Kaworu's smile grew even wider. "I would love to be your friend, Shinji."

The two of them walked together to the changing rooms, feeling a sense of excitement and anticipation. For the first time in a long time, Shinji felt like he had found someone he could truly connect with, someone who understood him.

As they changed into their plugsuits, Shinji couldn't help but feel a sense of hope. Maybe, just maybe, things were finally starting to look up for him.
