I stared at him. He looked a mess. His hair looked completely disheveled. His eyes were red, and there were dark circles under them. He looked like he had been crying all night. And his clothes were wrinkled.

But he still looked the same as he did six years ago. Tanned skin, muscled body, sharp jawline, but his hair is shorter now. He used to have brown locks falling on his eyes, which used to make my fingers tingle, wanting to brush them off his face. But now it was cut short.

Seeing his state, I felt so sad for him, but as soon as he had seen me, his eyes had turned cold. So I put on a blank face.

He hadn't said a word, just kept staring at me with a frown on his face. Guess someone is not happy to see me.

I expected as much, so I spoke. "Hi, I came to see the girls. How are they?"

"Fine," he answered shortly, still frowning.

I resisted rolling my eyes. What is wrong with him? We haven't even buried my sister yet, and he thought what? I was here to see him?

Hoping that since my sister is gone, I could check if I had a shot with him now? Ewww, is that what he thinks?! That's both disgusting and disturbing at the same time.

It's heartbreaking to think that your best friend had judged you so quickly and thought you could be capable of being that shameless. But he is no longer my best friend. He is no longer anything to me anymore. I just wanted to get away from him as soon as possible.

So I asked him quickly, "Can I see them?" He stayed silent, still staring at me. Maybe trying to see if he could find my true motives. Well, he is not gonna find anything there because I don't care about anything in this town, this house, or all these people except my little nieces. The only family I have left.

After some more staring, he sighed. "Paula, show Nicola their room. They have refused to come out of there since the news." he said.

And then he looked sad again. Lost and overwhelmed. There is so much to handle. I can imagine how he feels.

But I am not getting myself involved in his business. Sure, the kids I will help with. They are my responsibility too, but other than that, I am minding my own business.

I looked at Paula, waiting for her to escort me to their room. I said a soft thank you as a parting. But as I left, I heard him say, "Where's your luggage? Where are you staying?"

I turned to see him looking at me again. So I replied, feeling quite satisfied with the quick decision I had made. I felt a little bit of my self-respect returning after the cold look he had given me.

"At a hotel. I'll be staying a week. I will be coming to see the twins every day. I hope that's ok?"

It's best to ask that right now so I don't have to speak to him again.

"Yeah. They would like that." He replied softly, looking at me. I didn't want to meet his eyes. I nodded, turned and left, catching up with Paula, who was on the stairs waiting.
