"I knew you'd ask that. The answer to your question is rather simple. As we begin the process of selling our company, it is my wish for us to showcase a new innovative image to the public that is in alignment with Kirks & Marsh. With that being said, you will be working very closely with Mr. Fine to ensure all proper arrangements are made in the best interest of our company."
So, Kendall had been right...
"Is this your way of formally offering me a full-time position at Milton Co.? I mean, I don't even own an office."
"That's not a problem. I'm sure you've already heard some of the rumors about ongoing construction developments occurring on the department floor. That's because I authorized the addition of two new offices on the opposite wing. Come, I'll show you."
Before I could respond, my uncle was already rising from his seat and heading out of his office.
I silently trailed behind him, while we passed by several other high-position office doors. Along the way, we encountered variations of his staff who either ecstatically greeted him or commendably avoided making any contact with him altogether.
Overall, most employees seemed to be scurrying around the department, making sure to appear overtly preoccupied with their tasks. From their frantic behaviors alone, I could tell that it wasn't often that my uncle left his side of the floor.
After roughly five minutes, we'd finally reached the opposite wing. As my uncle had previously mentioned, there were two new doors installed next to each other at the end of the hallway. Gold plaques had been engraved onto the door frames, but names had yet to be inscribed onto them.
My uncle knocked on the first door, while we waited for whoever was on the opposite side to welcome us in.
When the door finally opened, Kendall's attractive features were the first thing to appear in my line of sight. I watched as he swiftly removed one of his hands tucked deep inside his pants pocket to firmly shake my uncle's hand. Completely ignoring my presence, he welcomed my uncle inside his new space.
From a quick assessment of Kendall's appearance, it was apparent that he'd received a fresh haircut since the last time I'd seen him. The nape of his neck was neatly trimmed, accompanied by a crisp hairline. When he turned his head, I could also see that he no longer bore a subtle beard, but now held remnants of a small scruff.
Thick eyebrows sculpted his handsome face, creating his signature overcast that shadowed his dark eyes. He wore an all-black suit jacket, which he removed to fully reveal a black button up that intuitively brought my attention to his muscular arms.
"To what do I owe the pleasure, Mr. Milton?" Kendall asked, as he leaned against the wall and placed his hands back into his trouser pockets.
"Well, I was just telling Sasha here about her new position. Thought I'd show her a glimpse of what could be hers, if she decides to accept my offer—"
My uncle was interrupted from his unfinished statement when his cellphone began to profusely ring. After answering it, he released several robotic hums of agreement before the call shortly ended.
"Sorry folks, it looks like I have an urgent matter I must tend to. Mr. Fine, do you think you could take my place and show Sasha around her office?"
"No problem, sir." Kendall rigidly agreed. My uncle thanked him before making a quick exit. With just the two of us remaining in the closeted space, the room filled with a pervasive silence.
I attempted to momentarily distract myself by taking in the simple decor of his office. The designs were a little modest, but I could tell that he had already begun to add some of his own personal touches. From the vast amount of books that decorated his shelves to the minimalistic paintings positioned intermittently throughout the room, it was clear he was a man of very refined tastes.
