Arturo turned around to face my parents. He was lucky that he was wearing a mask, or they would have recognized who he was in an instant. I hoped he would make up a good excuse that would be able to rectify this situation, because the last thing I wanted was my parents sniffing around and interfering in this.
"This woman here was lost," Arturo explained. "She simply asked me for directions." He folded his arms awkwardly.
"Lost in a ballroom?" Dad narrowed his eyes in confusion.
"Yeah," I said quickly, playing along. "I came up here for some fresh air. I was getting overwhelmed with the crowds."
Mum and Dad's face relaxed, so I allowed my tense shoulders to relax too. I turned back to Arturo, trying to read what he was thinking.
