The audience applauded the sad excuse of a party speech and I returned to my seat.

"Did you see that man? He was so freaking hot. I am going to make him mine. Just watch." Patricia squealed, moving to the unoccupied seat beside me. I couldn't quite decide what annoyed me more at the moment, her words or nasally voice.

"Honestly, I think you can do better Patricia." I lied.

Truth be told, I thought he could do much better. Something about a money-hungry woman like her trying to quirk her way into that man's pants pissed me off.

"I'm sorry Sasha, but I'm not buying it. I bet you want him all to yourself. Game on, bitch." I looked at her in disbelief and rolled my eyes.

That was her exact problem. She viewed everything as a game, always competing with me when it came to anything man-related. Men that I never wanted, at that. But, it seemed she had something to prove. To her, stealing my best guy friends proved that she was somehow better than me. Most of the time, she succeeded in turning them against me, so perhaps she was. I truly could care less.

"You can have him. I'm not competing with you over some random guy I just met. I have much more important things to focus on, like a career." Okay, that came off much harsher than I intended.

"It wouldn't be much of a competition anyways. I doubt that you're even his type." Before I could question what she meant by that, a deep voice echoed through the large venue.

"Hello everyone, my name is Kendall Fine. I'm sure many of you are already well aware of who I am, but I want to personally offer a brief introduction. I own the global tech company, Kirks & Marsh. This company was started by my great grandparents who came from a small village in Greece with nothing. Generation by generation, my family line succeeded this business and appreciated its economic value in the market. I am now proud to say that it is a growing multi-billion dollar tech corporation."

Kendall paused and the room applauded his commemorable words. He commanded the crowd without trying. His domineering voice and impenetrable atmosphere solicited unconditional respect from every member of the audience. His obsidian eyes roamed over the room, until they found mine.

"That is why I am proud to announce on behalf of Mr. Milton that, effective summer of next year, Kirks & Marsh will be partnering with Milton Co. Enterprise to buy majority stock in the company."

The room erupted with loud gasps and whispers, as many grew shocked at the revelation of his words. Eyes still fixed on mine, Kendall seemed to be deciphering my reaction. I didn't understand what he wanted, but, in that moment, I refused to give him anything other than a frown.

I scanned the room for Frank, but was unsuccessful in identifying his recognizable form. It was possible that he had left before the speech, or was currently in the bathroom having a dramatic meltdown. Either way, I wanted to make sure that he was okay, as he'd most likely be having the hardest time accepting this news.

"Unfortunately, Mr. Milton could not be present today. But he plans to make a direct statement at the next company wide meeting. Thank you for your time." Kendall disappeared back stage after the audience granted him another grand applause. I, on the other hand, prepared my belongings for a brisk escape.

"Leaving so soon from your own celebration? What a shame...but I do hope I'll be seeing you soon." I ignored Patricia's sly remark, determined in my efforts to make a quiet exit.

The event hadn't felt much like a celebration, anyways. Given that my uncle wouldn't be showing up,  there was no point in staying any longer. Just as I made it to the front entrance, my phone rang. I swiped right on the screen, quickly greeting the voice on the other end.

"Sasha, I'm backstage with Mr. Fine. We're taking photos for the sake of public image and media antics. You know, the usual. No doubt this will make headlines. He wants you to be in the pictures as well, so we can appear as a united front." It was Frank, I guess he had gotten word of the news before I did.

"Yeah, but no thanks. There's no way that you're actually okay with moving forward with this? We have to do something to stop it...that leach has no right to show up out of nowhere and think he can just take Milton Co. from us. I'll even agree to get my lawyers involved, if we have to. Besides, if he wants me there so bad, tell him to come pick my black ass up himself."

"Sasha, you're on speaker-"

"Goodnight Frankie." I cut the line, finalizing my departure.
