"Terrorists, murderers, crime lords... that sorta thing."
"Damn..." he whistled, "pretty heavy stuff, huh?"
"Sure i- ah!" He exclaimed. "Grrr!"
"Adam?!" Alex gasped, stepping closer to his side. "What's wrong?"
"Headache... guh..." he sighed, before regaining his composure and clearing his throat. "Let's go."
They had arrived at the tech room, where they had found Aurora's 'remains'... and where Jobari had claimed to have found the box with the consciousness of the 13th man inside, the survivor of the last Fatal Frolic who had helped to recover Aurora's memories.
Safe to say, a lot had happened in this room, so Alex was not prepared for whatever Adam was about to show him.
As always, the room was incredibly cluttered. Old and new devices and gadgets for all sorts of purposes were scattered all over the room.
Alex got a bit nervous as he looked around, seeing how messy it was, and so thought of how on earth Adam would find whatever it is he was looking for.
"So..." Alex began, "what did you wanna show me?"
"It's-" Adam paused, rummaging through a random cardboard box beneath the back shelf. "Ah! This is it!"
Adam had pulled out a circular device with strange knobs on the side, and a giant crimson button on top.
It had no labels to indicate what it was, so to Alex, it just looked like a mysterious gadget, straight out of a sci-fi film.
"What- is it?" Alex asked.
"Well," Adam began, lowering his voice, "it's a system overrider."
"A- what?!" Alex gasped.
"You know the mind overrider?" He asked. "It's essentially an ultimate version of one of those. It overrides the entire system and removes us all from the simulation."
"S-so, we can leave?!"
"Yes, we can- and we will!" He shouted with intense determination, as he struck his hand down toward the button.
That was their big chance.
They had to take it now because if they weren't fast, Fate might catch on to what they were doing.
That is why this choice had to be made so fast.
There was absolutely no room for hesitation. If they didn't act now, there may have never been another opportunity to do so.
The feeling of glory and triumph flowed through Adam's body as he reached down to the button, thoughts of his future, the world, and Fate's defeat empowered his decision.
With these hopeful and glorious thoughts racing in his mind, he presented to button to Alex and allowed him to do the honours, as he heaved his hand down and pressed the button.
"We- did it!!" Alex shouted.
"Yes... we did..." Adam sighed with relief.
However, after they said that, nothing happened.
The system overrider was either really slow, or it hadn't worked.
Ten long seconds passed before one of them finally decided to speak up.
"Uh-" Alex said, "why did... nothing happen?"
"W-we... we must give it a moment!" Adam cheerfully exclaimed, though with a sense of uncertainty seeping from his tone.
