(September 1925)
"Réveilles-Vous la fille," (Wake you sweetie!) My mother calls from the kitchen. I opened my eyes to the early morning sun peeping from the curtains. I rolled out of bed and slip on my slippers made from sheep wool and my old shoes. I walk down to my mother and hear as the old wooden stairs creak from below my feet. I walk into the kitchen to the smell of eggs and bacon. I take a seat at the kitchen table and watched as my mother put two eggs and three strips of bacon onto my plate. I hungrily ate my meal and then my mother send me to my room to get changed into my new pink cotton dress.
"Vite tu vas etre en retard à L'ecole." (Hurry up or you will be late for School) My mother yells. I quickly got changed and slipped on my new dress shoes. I ran back downstairs in my outfit and grabbed my bag from the table. I give my mother a quick kiss on the check and then run outside.
"Au revoir mama." (Bye Mama) I yell as I dash down the rock stairs and out onto the street. In the early morning rush, there are cars coming from all different directions on their way to work or to other places of business.
As I walk through the school gates and into the school yard I see two young boys, one tall with dark hair and the other short and scrawny with blond hair, both dressed in button up shirts and trousers. They were kicking a ball between them and laughing. I walked into my new classroom and placed my bag on one of the seats and then rushed outside to learn the new school campus. I then see the two boys again. The one with blond hair was holding the ball and the one with dark hair had his hand wrapped around the others shoulder. They both smiled at me as they came up to me.
"Good morning, I'm Steve." The blond-haired boy said. I smiled and put out my hand.
"I am Florence." I spoke. He shook my hand and then then I turned to the other boy.
"I am James, but you can call me Bucky." He shook my hand also.
"What year are you two in?" I asked.
"Year 2." Steve said.
"Year 3." Bucky said.
"I am in year 3 too!" I said excitedly. 'I finally had a friend to sit with in class!' I thought to myself.
Ever since that day Bucky Steve and I had become inseparable! We did everything together and even though people looked down on us we did it anyway.
(TIME SKIP TILL 10th OF MARCH 1928)
It was Bucky's 11th birthday, and we were meeting at a local park to have a small picnic. For his birthday I got him a new pair of socks and a block of white chocolate. It was wrapped in old newspaper, and I handmade the card for him. I joyfully walked out of the house after saying goodbye to my mother. I walked down the streets of Brooklyn and towards the small park where I could already see brightly coloured balloons and Bucky waiting patiently on the table. I ran over to him and gave him a hug.
"Happy Birthday Bucky!" I said to him as I handed him the present. He took it graciously and then placed it gently on the table behind him.
"Thank-you very much Flo! Thank-you for coming as well!" he said happily. I smiled as we took a seat at the table and waited for the third person in our trio to arrive. Soon enough, we saw a short blond boy and a blonde lady walk over to us with smiles on their faces.
"Steve!" Bucky and I shouted as we got up from our seats and raced towards the blond-haired boy. He stopped in his tracks as we both took him into a hug.
"Happy Birthday Buck!" Steve managed to squeeze out from our grip! We pulled away and walked back to the table, arms linked together. We all sat down at the table, Bucky in the middle, me on his right side and Steve on his left. We sat and ate lunch which consisted of cute little sandwiches and cordial. Once we had finished Bucky started opening presents. He opened mine first, admiring his new socks and opening the white chocolate, handing use both a piece. He thanked me for the gift and then gave me a hug. He then opened Steve's which consisted of the same white chocolate and a new notebook for him to write inside of. Bucky thanked him and gave him a hug as well. He then put his gifts into a neat pile on the side of the table and collected all the wrapping paper and then took it to the nearest rubbish bin. We all stood, and Bucky's mother gathered us up for a photo. We all took five photos together and we each got to keep one. Steve then went and asked his mother, Sarah, for his ball and then grabbed it off her and ran back over to us.
"Let's play for a bit, shall we?" We all agreed and then we started playing. We stood in a triangle and practiced kicking the ball between us for a little bit. We all enjoyed doing the kicking game with each other. We then went for a short walk around the park. We ended up finding a spot on the grass which was not covered with trees and watched as the sky went form a bright blue to a sunset orange to dark purple to then black. We all talked about funny things that we remembered about Bucky and other events that happened between us. I then asked a question.
"We're going to be best friends forever, right?" I smiled.
"Yeah of course we are." Steve answered.
"Right, friends till forever falls apart." Bucky added.
Then it was time to go home, and we each said goodbye to each other. Steve left with Sarah and we waved goodbye to him. Bucky and his mother, Winnifred, walked me back to my house. I gripped the photo of me, Bucky and Steve in my hands taking glances at it while we walked home. The streets were dark and only few people we out. We walked up the front steps of my house and I turned to Bucky.
"Thank-you Bucky for inviting me to your birthday I had a very fun time!" I said to him who was smiling and then I gave him a small hug.
"Thank-you very much for coming and for your gift! I am going to be living of chocolate 'till Christmas!" I chuckled along with him. I then knocked on my front door and heard my father come to the door. He opened the door and looked at me.
"Florence, s'il vous plait merci de remercier Bucky et sa mere pour la journee de ma part et de te mere." (Florence, please thank Bucky and his mother for the day from me and your mother) He smiled towards Bucky and his mother.
"He wants me to thank Bucky and you for having me and inviting me to your party." I say back to them.
"Oh, anytime Florence! Thank-you again for coming. Please tell your father that you are a blessing to have!" I smiled and waved goodbye to them as they walked back down the rock stairs. I watched till they got five houses down and then went inside with my father.
"Tu t'es bien amuse a la fete?" (Did you have fun at the party) He asked me. I nodded my head.
"Oui papa. Je suis beaucoup amuse avec Bucky et Steve." (Yes papa, I had lots of fun with Bucky and Steve) He nodded and then I walked upstairs to my room. I gently placed the photo of the trio onto my bed and then grabbed out my special box from under the bed. It was a small wooden box in which I had collected small items including photos, newspaper clippings and other things that had to do with me, Bucky, and Steve. I placed the new photo into the box. 'Another photo to add to my collection.' I placed the box back under my bed and then got changed into my 'night clothes' I then walked down into the kitchen to see my mother and father sitting on the couch reading the newspaper.
"Bonsoir Mama et Papa." (Goodnight Mama and Papa)
"Bonne nuit ma cherie." (Goodnight my sweetie) I walked upstairs to my room and tucked myself in bed.
