We have having seafood dinner like we always do on the first day at the house. Steven, Noah and Jere on the left side of the table. Susannah is the head at the table. Next her is my mum Laural. Next to Laural is belly and next to belly is me and guess who I am next to. Connie. It is so awkward. We are not making eye contact and his body is facing where Jere, Noah and Steven is sitting. The three boys are looking at something on Steven's phone and they are laughing.
"Steven, I swear to God, if you look at that phone one more time, I'm putting it in the screen basket." Laural said irritated.
"It's just, we want to see your beautiful faces. Can dinner be a screen-free zone? You know, like the olden days. " Susannah asked nicely
Steven laughs.
"Steven." Jere said while taking Steven's phone and threw it in the chair behind me.
"Dude, are you kidding me?"
"Boom! Nailed it."
"YES JERE!" I said high fiving him.
"Okay, okay, okay, we get it, you've been working out." Steven said jealously
"Oh, you're just jealous because Jere has a better body than you." Belly said.
"Sorry to say Steven. I have to agree with Belly."I said laughing.
"Uh, no, actually, it's all about the lean look now. Otherwise, you can't wear tailored suits."
"When did' 'tailored suits' get you any girls, Steven?" I asked.
"I - I mean. She got a point " Jere said
"Tailored suits." Conrad muttered.
"When are you leaving for training camp, man?" Steven asked
"Uh, he quit football." Jere said.
What the actually fuck. This is definitely a different Conrad.
"Wh... Wait, really?" Noah said
"You quit?" Belly asked
"Mm-hmm." He nodded.
"Are you kidding me, man? I'd-I'd kill to play college ball." Steven said to get approval from Susannah.
"He can always change his mind." She said
"I'm not gonna change my mind. I was just gonna sit on the bench all season anyways."
"Well, if you're not playing football anymore, what are you gonna do all summer?" Mum asked
"Oh, dude, you can work at the club. Yeah, with me and Jere." Steven said.
"Yeah. I'm not gonna work at the club." Conrad said.
"Wait, you guys are working this summer?" Belly asked shocked.
"Yeah, Jere and I lifeguarding, and Steven's working at the snack shop." Noah said
"You lifeguarding! you are going to be busy flirting with the girls and going to forget to save the drowning children." I said while pissing myself.
"Jess you you want me to tell everyone about last Saturday" Noah said with an innocent smile. I stopped laughing.
"Don't your fucking dare, Noah. Remember I have way worse shit on you so don't cross me." I said while smiling.
"ANYWAYS, I am guessing you are going to be a deb again." Belly asked me
"You guessed wrong. I got a job to be a deb sister. I said
"Does that mean you can take the left over desserts?" Jere asked
"Don't worry Jere I will bring you some home" i said and he smiled.
"Oh, Belly, I almost forgot. I have a surprise for you." Susannah said
"I know what it is." I said by telling by the invitation.
"So, this is why you had to stop by the country club." Mum said
"Mm."
"What, uh, wh-wh-what is that?" Steven asked
"I wrangled Belly an invitation to be a debutante." Susannah said
"Is that the thing where the girls wear white dresses and curtsy?" Belly asked
"Basically." I agreed with Belly's question.
"It's when a girl comes of age and is presented to society. I-I know it sounds silly, but I swear it's fun. Girls come from all over New England to Cousins just to be a part of it. You'll make so many new friends. Ask Jess, that is where she met Gigi and Nicole." Susannah explained;
"I cannot believe you are still holding on to this archaic dream." Mum said
"You can't say anything. You cave in and let Jess do the ball remember?" Susannah said which made my mum roll her eyes
"No, it used to be about finding a husband, but now it's about networking. They teach you leadership skills, like how to market yourself, and it benefits charity. It's, um, like a bat mitzvah."
Laural laughs and said, "It is not like a bat mitzvah. There is nothing religious about a debutante ball."
"The whole deb scene is bullshit. It's for sheep." Conrad said
"You can't say anything. You were my escort, which technically means you were a sheep's escort so you are kind of a sheep." I said to annoy him.
"Ooohhh!" Jere, Noah Steven said. Mum gave them a look to shut them up and Conrad just rolled his eyes.
"No, it's not. It's when a girl has a coming out, it's a formal recognition she's reached maturity."
"Oh, sorry. I'm sorry. Mature?" Steven laughed.
"Yes."
"Belly. A-a couple months ago you had a cat funeral. You made us all wear black." Steven said
"Shut up, Steven. I saw you crying in your room." Belly said trying to embarrass him.
"Wait, Mochi died? Dang. I'm sorry, Bells." Jere said to try and change the conversation.
"Belly. Don't you want to get all dressed up?" Susannah asked.
"It's just not Belly's kind of thing. She's our feral little alley cat." mum said shaking Belly's hair. Everybody laughs and she turns red.
"I'll think about it." Belly said to trying to act mature
"She'll think about it." Susannah said happily.
