Sadism and masochism are all about pain, or rather the enjoyment of pain.
A sadist enjoys inflicting (certain types of) discomfort or pain to their partner(s). Seeing the results of it, like bruises, scratches or even tears in the eyes of their partner(s), causes them joy.
For masochists, it's the exact opposite. They enjoy receiving (certain types of) pain. It's important to note that masochism is independent of pain tolerance. It is purely about the ability to enjoy/get aroused by pain. Masochists also like to see marks, bruises, scratches or similar things like that. In contrast to sadists, they enjoy to see those things on them selves rather than on their partner(s).
