39. Adopting

Shout-out to MaggieCantin because they're so sweet and helped me fix the French translation in one of the earlier chapters!

"So," Alec started as he and Magnus entered Magnus's apartment.

"So?" Magnus asked, shutting the door behind him.

"You've thought about adopting?" Alec asked. Ever since they took care of Brianna and Stephen and Magnus mentioned adopting, Alec had been thinking about it a lot.

Magnus took a seat on the couch and Alec sat beside him.

"Yeah, I mean, do you want to?" Magnus asked. "Obviously we would do it after all this Valentine's follower stuff dies down." Magnus paused. "Would you want to?"

"Maybe, eventually." Alec shrugged.

Alec bit his lip nervously. "Would you want a boy or a girl?"

"Depends on what you would want too, but I've always wanted a girl," Magnus said.

Alec nodded, going back to chewing his lip nervously, a worried look on his face.

"Hey," Magnus said, lightly touched Alec's shoulder. "What's wrong?"

"Do you not want to adopt? We don't have to if you don't want to," Magnus told his boyfriend.

"No, I want to adopt with you, but I'm afraid that if we do-" Alec sighed. "What if I turn out to be like my father? My dad was never there for us, he all but ditched us. He and my mom are now separated. He was a terrible father. I don't want to put a kid through that."

"Hey," Magnus said again, moving his hand up from Alec's shoulder to cup his cheek. "You are nothing like your dad, nor will you ever be. Your father was a coward, you're one of the bravest people I know. You're not going to ditch me or our child if we adopt one. You're going to be a great father."

"My dad also cheated on my mom," Alec added.

"You're not going to cheat on me," Magnus said firmly.

"How do you know? My mom didn't think my dad was going to cheat on her either," Alec said.

"Are you planning on cheating on me?" Magnus raised an eyebrow.

"No," Alec said.

"Well, there you go," Magnus said.

"But my dad probably didn't think he was going to cheat either," Alec said, returning to chewing his lip off.

"Alec, you are not like your dad. I can promise you that you won't ditch us, we will not split up, and you will not cheat on me. Do you know how I know you're not going to cheat on me?" Magnus asked.

"You can tell the future?" Alec's eyes widened.

"No." Magnus chuckled. "I wish, but no."

"I know, because you'll know I'm not like your mum. You'll know that if you cheat on me, I'm not going to let you get away with it. You'll know that if you cheat on me, I'm will kill you." Magnus smiled sweetly. "Slowly."

Alec smiled slightly. Usually people threatening to kill you would scare you, but in Alec's case, it was comforting.

"Thanks Magnus," Alec said. "And I promise you will never have to kill me because I know I won't cheat on you."

"Good."

"And, when the time comes, after all this Valentine follower stuff dies down," Alec said. "We'll adopt a baby girl."
