🏮68. Obsession

Start from the beginning

Amber wiggled violently, trying to free herself, and received a rough squeeze from the vine in return. She tried to gasp for air, but her lungs had no room to expand. She felt panic fill her as her face started to feel like it was going to pop and her lungs fluttered.

"I knew you would try to go against me. Just like a wild mafau, you also need to be broken, and trained. You'll learn that it's useless to go against me and eventually you'll come to heel; like a well trained pet. Hopefully not too soon though, I'm sure I'll enjoy the process of breaking you."

Not if I break you first, thought Amber.

Amber looked back over to Oberon once more, extremely worried by this time. She could feel heat at her earlobe, as if someone held a lighter to her ear, where their connection was. Although she hadn't known him for long, she felt pain in her heart. He was her comrade. He had put himself in her care and that wasn't something that she took lightly. She had died completely alone in her past life. Each meaningful connection that she gained in this life was indescribably precious to her.

"Don't worry, I won't kill it. Don't think that I'm giving it back to you though," Duke Dreyfus leaned down close to her face until their noses touched and talked to her in a conspiratorial voice. "You see, I know a technique to steal a mafau or maflo to make them my familiar; even if they already have a master. It doesn't matter what they want. I don't need them to choose me, as others have to be chosen. However, there is a catch. If they're resistant, I just have to get them on the brink of death first. It's a big process and a hassle to do. But when it involves you, it's worth it," said Duke Dreyfus.

Amber's eyes widened. What kind of male lead is this? What kind of screwy world did I get herself thrown into?

Duke Dreyfus turned his face away from Amber, and looked over to his subordinates. They had come out of the buildings, to have a look at the show. His eyes met those of Jessera, who was smirking with glittering happy eyes, while watching Amber struggle.

"Escort my Lovely Lotus to the room that she and I will be sharing above," Duke Dreyfus said to Jessera. Her face suddenly soured and then she abruptly looked at Amber with accusatory eyes.

Duke Dreyfus handed her something, but Amber didn't see what it was. Then Duke Dreyfus got close to Amber again and pulled a black and red wristband out of his pocket. He looked at Amber deep in her eyes, as if he were a man proposing with an engagement ring. He leaned down to kiss the top of her hand. Then grabbed hold of Amber's hand and slipped the magic restraint band onto her wrist.

Amber felt her stomach drop and her heart pick up speed as soon as the wristband glowed red while it locked into place.

"This is a level seven magic device and a family heirloom. There's no point in trying to compare this to a normal magic restraining item. You can forget about ever getting this off in your lifetime. From now on, you're mine. You will no longer be able to use magic and will only be able to use magic items that require the smallest amount of mana. Like stoves, so that you can cook meals for me," Duke Dreyfus said before slapping Amber's butt.

Duke Dreyfus turned his attention to Omar who had walked over and automatically got into a kneeling position with his face turned downward.

"You will take this creature to the stables and make sure that it's secured. Then report yourself to me directly afterwards. We have many things to discuss and I wouldn't suggest keeping me waiting."

"Yes your Grace," said Omar.

Duke Dreyfus walked over to Oberon and roughly grabbed him by his nose, squeezing. "You're mine now and you will learn how to obey me, or you will die a slow and painful death." Then he let go of Oberon, pulled back his hand, and slapped Oberon in the eye. "Beasts should know who their superiors are," Duke Dreyfus said. While Oberon weakly whimpered, Duke Dreyfus held out his palm which glowed blue and put Oberon in a bubble.

Abruptly the Duke turned around, going into the building with the arches and pillars. Omar took this time to lift his head and stand up. He looked at Duke Dreyfus's back with an incomprehensible look in his eyes. Then he walked over to Oberon in the bubble and directed it around the other side of the building.

Amber made sure to take note of which direction Omar took Oberon. One way or another, she would find a way to save him.

After the Duke was out of sight, the vines loosened around Amber, and started to fall off. Amber shook them the rest of the way off and kicked them in anger. Then she felt a strong zap come from the wristband and flow through her body. She fell on the ground and involuntarily shook while being electrocuted. Amber's jaw involuntarily clenched while she watched Jessera lean over her with a smug smile on her face.

"That's what you get for coveting Erin Dreyfus. He's only temporarily interested in you, so don't get too full of yourself!" Jessera said.

Amber gasped for breath as soon as the pain stopped, while anger bubbled up within her. "Good! I'm not a trash collector. Take him if you want. If you're brave enough to chase after him, do so. If you remain gutless, it still has nothing to do with me. Don't target me with your petty jealousy. You're placing all of your energy on the wrong target. It's just pathetic and desperate at this point. If you're not a complete moron, you should have figured out by now that people who come off as desperate are extremely unattractive. So good luck with that," Amber said.

Jessera's eyes glowed from anger and suppressed mana pressure. "I will kill you," Jessera said slowly while shaking from anger.

"You're not authorized to kill me. Remember? I'm the 'Lovely Lotus'. Lead the way, little doggy," Amber said.

Present Time

Amber chuckled to herself deprecatingly. What a strange second life this was. Second life? Had she lost her mind? If she just allowed things to flow as they wanted to and stopped trying to fight it, where would she end up? Would she just die like in Duchess Dash? It seemed that no matter what she tried to do, she still ended up with the same results. Was this world just determined to kill her no matter what? My gosh, she was exhausted.

Amber frowned as a dizzying feeling started taking over her head. Wow, she really was exhausted. She frowned in confusion and lowered her hand to the bed, trying to push up her head to get some fresh air. The room felt suffocating. She started to push her head up, when her eyes widened, and her heart fell to her feet.

In the corner of the room was pink incense burning with a strange sort of invisible smoke coming from it. The smoke looked like heat coming off of metal. You couldn't see it very well, but in a certain light, you saw a glimmer of something.

Amber tried to push herself all the way up in bed, while trying to get her sluggish brain to think, but there was no motivation. She fell backwards onto the cushy pillows, suddenly feeling like her body was far too heavy to lift.

Another giggle escaped her lips, full of nervousness, and hatred. Really? Why did she keep meeting such vile people?

"That SOB," Amber said. Then fell back down, while her eyes rolled into the back of her head.

Her head pounded while her heart beat wildly in her ears. A light sheen of sweat appeared on her skin while her body heated up. Although she'd never been interested in men the same way her friends had been, she knew what that incense was for.

She wanted to kill him. A burst of maniacal laughter escaped from her lips, while she wondered what would happen to this world if she killed the male lead. Would this world even be affected? Was all of this in her head? Has she become crazy?

She forced her eyes open and to focus when she heard footsteps at the door. Then she heard the slight squeak of hinges as the door shut. She heard a slow step, after a slow tortuous step. Until her eyes locked onto those emerald green eyes. They seemed unbearably hot and taunting.

What's wrong with the men in this world?!
