18. Bloody Vampires

I highly doubted that, I thought.

"In his early teenage years, his angelic side started to overpower his vampirism. And when people don't understand something, they start to feel insecure. That's exactly what happened to his father. His father trained him to be a cold-blooded monster, but he was starting to show signs of empathy and service towards his people."

"Sort of like a guardian angel, which he still is. Protecting everyone and everything," Emma said.

"But his father didn't like that, he hated the fact that Damien was starting to show emotions. So he tried to kill his angelic side, performing all these rituals and whatnot from what I have heard. He worked with a witch to complete his intentions, but he wasn't able to succeed," Eric paused and then said, "well, he did succeed partially. Damien ended up losing his angelic powers and the vampire side became stronger, but his wings still remained as a final reminder... and as for the emotions, I like to believe they are still there somewhere."

"So the king tried to destroy the main reason he was attracted towards Damien in the first place?" I asked him, confused.

Damien was captured because of his unique identity, why would the vampire king try to take that away?

"Exactly, he was too scared that his angelic side would defy him and soon enough learn the rights from wrongs. But he didn't realize that his actions would backfire and put an end to some of his capabilities. Or perhaps he did not care about the consequences because he was confident in his vampire strength, despite his special powers."

I shook my head, it didn't make sense. There was a lot of information being thrown at me, and I tried my hardest to put the pieces together. Damien's father was a complicated man, first he wanted an heir who was unstoppable. But then he tries to limit his abilities.

Perhaps it wasn't about killing his better half, perhaps it was about gaining control over the other.

He just wanted to control him, one way or the other.

Before Damien's good deeds could get in the way of his missions, the king decided to snatch them from its roots.

What a true monster he was.

I found myself wondering if Damien still struggled with the two opposite sides of his being. One was deadly and destructive, while the other was pure and protective.

How did he not go crazy on a daily basis fighting between the two truths of his life?

Nature really had a cruel way to torture him.

We ended up staying up the entire night.

It was just starting to get brighter outside as the dark, thundering clouds faded away.

Damien still hadn't shifted an inch from the face up position he was lying in. However, the scratches and wounds on his body had started to heal, maybe the ointment was working its magic by pulling the silver from his body.

I don't know why he wasn't yet awake, though.

He was perfectly still.

Looking up, I noticed Emma and Eric had their eyes closed. It gave me the perfect opportunity to do something that I had been dying to do since the very moment I sat down next to Damien.

I finally reached out to gently caress his head, pushing back the hair that had fallen on his forehead.

He looked unreal, and beautifully breathtaking.
