Damien's POV

"It's an honor, your majesty."

"Queen Clarissa," I greeted the woman I hadn't seen in years, returning her warm smile.

Her and her husband, King Samuel ruled the kingdom of Narvania which was one among the nine kingdoms of the vampire world.

"You must meet my daughter, Iliana. Here she is now," she held her arm out and a girl that seemed no older than twenty appeared beside her.

She wore a silky, ocean-blue gown that matched her eyes, the dress was embellished with silver jewels around her waist and flowed effortlessly to the ground. She held up her dress with one hand to prevent stepping on it since it was so long.

"King Damien," she held her hand out, "it's nice to finally meet you."

She was the definition of grace and beauty, the way she carried herself.

I accepted her hand, "what a surprise to see you here. Your father always has so much to say about your accomplishments and character, it's nice to finally put a face to the kind soul he describes."

She let out a small laugh, "he exaggerates; it's not always easy being a princess, but I try to stay true to myself. After all, you should be your biggest critique."

"Nonsense," her proud mother stepped in, "there is nothing to critique, my lord. She already has all the great qualities a princess should posses, I'm sure she is going to become an even better queen one day."

"Indeed," I agreed but then a sound of laughter erupted through the walls.

There were multiple conversations happening in the room, people laughing in groups or just enjoying each other's company. But her laughter stood out to me and stole my attention, I turned my head towards her, where I knew she was sitting on the far left table with Emma and her friends.

Once my eyes found her, I noticed what she was laughing at, or rather with who.

My greatest rival, Nicholas.

His kingdom had been at war with mine for generations, until his dad finally accepted the defeat when I became king. He understood he never stood a chance against me, and our troops and army which was now stronger than ever.

It didn't make sense why he would be talking to Aliya unless he had some suggestive intentions. Or he could just be trying to get on my nerves.

I would like to think it wasn't working, I was not going to lose control like I did at his ball. It led to me name calling her and taking my anger out on her when I should've been mad at him.

His arm was casually resting on her chair while he leaned in to say something to her, she instantly retrieved back but nodded to whatever he asked.

The gesture was enough to send my mind into an overdrive.

My vision suddenly became clouded until all I saw was red. I didn't know I was walking until my body collided with something, someone.

It was a waitress, the impact sent a tray full of drinks shattering to the floor. The loud noise surrounded every corner of the room, with everyone's eyes now on me. Ignoring the sudden attention which was now on me, I continued to walk out of the room.

I just needed to get some fresh air, which was weird because I didn't need oxygen to survive.

But being in that room seemed to be suffocating me.

My steps took me right to my study, and I pushed the doors open to step inside, closing it behind me to block out the distant chaos of music and various conversations behind me.
