SAM DIDN'T LIKE LYING TO HER MOM, BUT SHE FIGURED IT WOULD BE BETTER THIS WAY. Especially considering the situation at hand. No way would Claudia believe that an inter-dimensional monster ate their cat. So, lying it was.
Claudia was outside, shaking a cat toy around while calling out for her baby. Inside, Sam and Dustin pretended to be looking around.
"She's coming back in." Sam warned her brother as he picked up the phone.
"Dusty, baby, you're sure she's not in your room?" Claudia closed the door quietly. Dustin held out his hand for his mother to wait.
"Uh huh. Thank you so much Mr. McCorkle. Thank you so much. You are a true lifesaver."
Sam rubbed her mothers arm affectionately to calm her down.
"Alright, this was great. Alright, great. Have a good one. Bye-bye now. Alright...you, too." He set the phone down and turned around. "Alright, great news."
"They found her?" Claudia stifled a cry.
"No, but they saw her wandering around Loch Nora." Dustin walked closer to his family. Claudia let a few tears fall.
"How did the poor baby get all the way out there?" She chuckled sadly.
"I don't know. She must be lost." Sam added quickly, sending a glance to her younger brother.
"Yeah, but they're gonna look for her. And we'll stay here just in case they call again." Dustin motioned to himself and his sister. "And you're gonna go help look? Yeah?"
Claudia nodded and pulled her kids into a tight hug.
"Alright, give us a hug, and go get her." Sam smiled as she pulled away. "You're gonna find her."
"Okay." Claudia turned, grabbing her keys and sunglasses.
"We're gonna find her." Dustin reassured.
"We're gonna find her." Claudia agreed.
"I love you." Sam sent her mom a kiss.
"I love you." Claudia repeated.
"I love you." Dustin finished.
"Alright." Claudia sighed, stepping out of the house and pulling the door closed behind her. Sam sighed.
"I feel so bad for lying." She ran a hand through her hair.
"Well, this is better then telling her a monster ate her." Dustin rushed around. "Now come on. We don't have very long."

First things first, they needed a place to keep the dog sized thing captive. Running outside, they pulled open the cellar doors and nodded to each other.
Back in the house, Dustin rummaged through a hallway closet and pulled out old baseball catcher pads. Sam flung the refrigerator door open and pulled out the pack of lunch meats their mother had just bought.
Handing a pile to her brother, Sam began placing them in a line that led directly to the cellar. Afterward, Dustin dressed in the pads and Sam grabbed her crowbar.  Picking Dustin's signature hat off the sofa, she tugged it over her blonde shaggy cut.
"I'll have the shed doors ready for you to get inside. And I have this if we need." Sam held her weapon of choice up lazily.
"Right. See in a minute." Dustin walked to his bedroom door. Sam rushed out to the shed and closed the rotting wooden door behind her. Dustin gave her a few seconds before speaking through the bedroom barrier.
"Alright, Dart. Breakfast time." He slid the door open and hobbled off. "Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. Oh, my God." He rambled. "Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit." He muttered the rest of the way.
As soon as the youngest Henderson started down the steps, Sam opened the door and moved out of the way. Once he was inside, she closed it tightly and the siblings looked out through the spaces in the wood.
"Come on. Come on, I know you're hungry." Dustin spoke softly.
The creature in question came around the corner and stepped outside. Sam sucked in a breath at the sight of it. It was so much bigger than the little bugger they found in their trash just a few days ago.
"Shh, there he is." She warned. As it got closer and closer, the siblings breathing picked up. Right before Dart hopped into the cellar, he turned towards the shed. Both kids gasped and jumped away from the door.  After a few seconds, they didn't hear anything. Glancing back through the cracks, they yelped when they made direct eye contact with it. Well, as best as they could considering it didn't have a face.
It chirped as it stepped towards them. Dustin took a deep breath before running out. It sufficiently scared the monster enough for Dustin to be able to slap it away. It rolled down the stairs to the bottom of the dank basement. Sam ran forward and slammed the door shut. The two Henderson's laid atop the doors to keep them closed.
"I'm sorry, Dart. But you ate our cat." Dustin panted.
