The bus is full of the same people everyday.
The kids that are just too excited for school take the front four rows. The girls who spend the whole ride talking are next. The boys who play video games are behind them. Then the bullies. Then there's the last row.
My row.
It's just me and Emma in the back. No one else dares to sit with us. Everyone stares at us as we walk to our spot.
They whisper behind their hands but I can still hear them.
"Psycho kid."
"He is such a loser."
"I feel bad for him."
"His parents didn't want him."
I keep my head down as I sit down.
"Just ignore them, Jace," Emma says.
"Why don't they talk about you, too?" I ask her.
"They just ignore me."
"I wish they would ignore me, too."
"No you don't, Jace."
"You don't know that Emma."
"I know everything about you, Jace," she says with a threatening voice.
Right then a huge sticky wad of gum lands in my hair.
A boy named, Peter stares at me from halfway across the bus.
"Who are talking to, Jace?"
"Emma," I answer.
"Who's Emma? No one here is named Emma."
"Yeah, she's right here," I say as I gesture towards her.
"Jace, just stop," Emma whispers.
"No one can see your imaginary friends, little Jacey," Peter taunts.
"Don't call me that."
"What? Jacey? Jacey did you forget your meds this morning? Are you seeing things?"
"No, I'm not. Tell them, Em."
"Jace just drop it," she says.
"No! You need to tell them!" I grab her hand. She looks at me with tears in her eyes.
"Where is she, Jace? I can't see her," Peter says.
"She's right here!" I say as I clenched her hand.
"Where? Right here?" He asks as he waves his hand right where Emma is sitting.
His hand goes right through Emma's body.
Emma has tears in her eyes. She grasps my arm.
"W- what? Emma?"
"Jace, he's lying. I'm right here!"
The bus pulls into the front of the school and slams its brakes making Peter fall backwards. I hit my head of the seat in front of me, sending a sharp pain to the center of my brain. Emma grabs my hand and pulls me into the isle. She rushes over to the front of the bus. I jump over Peter who is getting up now and run with Emma to our first class.
And so goes another day avoiding trouble in the back of the bus.
