❎ Atheism - An atheist witch/pagan can choose to work with deities by working with psychological archetypes. They can choose to take this a step further and create a Soul Puppet of a deity, e.g. Aphrodite. In their head, an atheist witch can talk to their Aphrodite Puppet about issues with their self-confidence, and imagine what Aphrodite would say in return. The witch could cast a spell as a placebo device to get the Aphrodite Puppet's aid; during the spellcasting the witch alieves that Aphrodite is real. Through these actions, despite knowing it's all a placebo, the witch could improve their self-confidence. (That's the great thing about placebos!)

Choosing deities to work with

Some witches are eclectic which means that they work with any deity(ies) from any pantheon that suits their purposes. Other witches choose to follow a specific tradition which means they can only work with specific deities from a specific pantheon. For example, practitioners of Haitian Vodou never work with deities outside of their tradition, whereas an eclectic witch might work with Hermes (Greek god) one day, and Thor (Norse god) the next day.

Do deities choose you? In my experience, this is pretty uncommon - especially for inexperienced witches. The way more common scenario is that a witch researches which deities they want to work with, and then try various communication methods to reach out to them. In other words, the witch normally makes the first move.

How to choose a deity/pantheon to work with:
> Research different pantheons, read up on their mythology and lore. Focus on the particular one appeals to you most.
> Take your ancestry into account (2). As a random example, do you know if you're of Norse, Latino, or East Asian descent? Consider taking a DNA test and delving into a section of your ancestry that appeals to you.
> Ask the gods to bring you a message during meditation or in a series of synchronicities. Signs from the same handful of deities may emerge.
> Invite deities to visit you in your dreams. Write down the images you remember when you first wake, then look for those symbols or images in your research.
> Once you have found a pantheon that resonates with you, meditate on each of the gods to make sure you are comfortable with them. Make offerings to them as well.
