chapter 15 • he smiled at her, his heart completely wrapped in flowers

the limo parked outside the venue, and i glanced around uneasily.

i wiped my hands on my arms.

"persevere! you'll do great!" mia tried to encourage, opening the door.

"fuck no. i'm gonna give up." i groaned, but stepped out.

jack held the train of my dress, so it wouldn't get dirty before i stepped into the ballroom.

my dress was red, and covered in flowers.

i stood in front of the large double doors. i was already panicking, and i wasn't even inside yet.

jack fixed the tiara on my head, and patted my shoulder.

"go!" he rushed.

cherry did her big entrance.

jack frowned, watching in admiration as everyone stared at her.

he felt the same, empty feeling again.

the feeling of longing.

of missing something he never knew existed.

like an emotion you can't name, it was always there and he could never find the words to describe it.

he'd been trying for so long to find the cause of his feelings.

but he never found it.

all he ever found was flower petals, shells of what someone used to be.

he didn't want everyone to see him as him.

he wanted everyone to see him, who he was. he didn't want people to see snow.

jack didn't think he could ever be under the sun.

he wanted to be seen, he wanted his soul to be seen.

he craved warmth from another hurt, not a physical warmth.

on sunny days he went out, walking down long streets.

the sun would slowly go away, covered by clouds.

he always found himself looking at trees, and the disguised sun.

not even the sun wanted to be with him.

neither did the moon.

all he truly had was the earth.

he had the dirt, he had grass, flowers, trees, ice, and snow.

but he never had what he wanted.

he ended up watching the trees sway in the cold wind he'd created, whistling a name he couldn't hear.

the sun rays would come back up when he disappeared, and he could only see them when they couldn't see him.

he saw them through gaps in leaves, and the longing would come back.

he'd always hoped one day he'd have more than what he did.

all he wanted to do was he seen.

he missed the feeling of yearning. he missed flower petals and venus.

he missed arrows.

he missed cherry.

but he didn't know it.

he missed all that he was, and he'd never know it, because he'd been cursed by the moon.

he was destined to forever be confused and sad.

so everyday of fall, he'd lay in tall grass, almost like icicles.

he'd make flower crowns, waiting desperately for the moon to hear him.

he'd cry, tears turning to ice that cooled venus.

and when he did, flowers would blow into his hair, trees surrounding him.

fall came after summer, and before winter.

it was the in-between of cherry and jack.

when they missed each other, without knowing each other.

he wasn't even close to figuring out what he missed.

but he wished one day, he would.

that when the leaves turned brown, something would change, and he'd know.

he'd wake up one day and be as viewed as cherry was.

he was cold. he was winter and ice, always alone.

she was warm. she was summer and flowers, always surrounded.

they were polar opposites.

cherry was viewed by everyone.

they saw her as an object that they didn't know. at this point, she was almost human to them.

she'd given up what she was for this.

so why did she miss something that had never happened to her, or in a past life?

she would fly up to the moon on a vine, and he would send her halfway back, telling her she was still needed.

to him, she'd been like the fear of eating a watermelon seed, and thinking one would grow out of you.

now, he was scared he'd lose her.

and she didn't need him, so why did she keep him around?

if everyone could see her, why did she need the one person who couldn't be seen?

"jack!" mia slapped his arm.

he walked into the ball room after cherry.

everyone's eyes turned to face him, and he looked behind him.

mateo and mia weren't in sight. they'd already sat down.

cherry stood next to him.

jack looked around the room. it was fully decorated, and full of people.

"they can see me?" jack asked, looking over at the redhead beside him.

cherry grabbed his hands. "they can see you."

he smiled at her, his heart completely wrapped in flowers.
