WRITTEN: 12/24/21
this is based off by the song "last christmas" because i was randomly inspired earlier and thought that it'd be interesting to write my version of what the lyrics jn the original are referring to, as in what really happened that last christmas.
unlike the original, which is in the view of reminiscing, my version is set in that literal last christmas; a more detailed explanation of how it all went down. i took the line " this year to save me from tears, i'll give it to someone special " and developed a whole concept for it.
there are many versions of last christmas recorded, but my main resource while writing 'someone special' was ofcourse the original by wham!, which i replayed about four times. however, i was originally inspired by ariana grande's cover from her christmas kisses ep. in ariana's cover only the chorus remained the same as the original, which sets it apart from all the other covers recorded in my opinion. that's kinda what i did with 'someone special'
i analyzed the lyrics of the original for twenty minutes, pausing it every five seCONDSs to make sure i revised the scenes and settings properly, which got me all in my feelings honestly-
which is good because to write a proper song you need to feel that way-
except my song sucks :D ( they all do tbh )
i have a nostalgic cOnNeCtIOn with 'last christmas', specifically because back in the 7th grade i was in my so called headtbreak-hopeless romantic era so i remember during christmas time i would just start singing it and oH hOw sAd. guess i've lived it but not really. idk how to explain it but sooner or later I'm going to have to explain it or else the early songs written 2 years ago wouldn't make sense-
more about 'special someone' is i tried to write it in the way the original was, and obviously every songwriter has their own formula. that's why this sucks so much. THIS ISN'T HOW I TYPICALLY WRITE A SONG AT ALL
here it goes:
Someone Special
VERSE #1:
It's Christmas Night and the lights on the tree are sparkling so bright ( so bright )
But my eyes are on you and how beautiful you look
I'm thinking to myself, planning it all out
How this'll be the night I tell you how I feel
I'm hoping that you'll be content with my eternal love as your present
Afterall, isn't that all you've ever wanted?
Or am I mistaken?
After hearing what you've just said, I've finally awaken and realized you've been pinning me out for quite a while now
I hope you know it's my heart you're breaking and it can't be put back again to mend
For you money does solve all your problems and one love isn't enough
I guess I've read the signs all wrong
CHORUS:
Maybe next year I'll find that someone special
They'll be the one I give my heart to
I'll be happy, not crying underneath the mistletoe
And that someone special will know how to treat me right
They'll gift me all the love I deserve on Christmas Day, night and the rest of my life
Cause next year I will find that someone special
And they'll be the one I gift my heart to
VERSE #2:
I'm not one to keep my distance
Tonight I had held you in my arms near the firelight
Yeah, I bet that's a moment you'll never forget
I bet he'll never love you the way I did
And I bet next Christmas I'll be replaying in your head when you're kissing him and wishing it was me instead
CHORUS:
Maybe next year I'll find that someone special
They'll be the one I give my heart to
I'll be happy, not crying underneath the mistletoe
And that special someone will know how to treat me right
They'll gift me all the love I deserve on Christmas day, night and the rest of my life
Cause next year I'll find that someone special
And they'll be the one I'll give my heart to
VERSE #3:
When the presents were being passed, I handed you a note
With the words I love you written in pink gel ink
Wholeheartedly, like a fool, meant every letter of it
I know next Christmas you'll miss me
But it'll be too late because I'll be with my someone special
BRIDGE:
You saw right through me
Only using me to strike your vulnerability
While I thought we'd grow older together, all I ever was to you was a shoulder to cry on
A face on a lover with fire in her heart
I'm all undercover cause you tore me apart
How dare you? Especially on Christmas Day
And with an explanation is vague
Neither him or I are to blame
It's you and your soul of ice
You've really messed it up for the both of us this time
When I find that real love, you won't be so slick to never fool me again
CHORUS:
I hope that next year I'll find that someone special
Have someone to give my heart to
Then I can finally be happy and you won't haunt me
Next year I'll find that someone special
They'll be the one I give my heart to
I'll be happy, not crying underneath the mistletoe
And that special someone will know how to treat me right
They'll gift me all the love I deserve on Christmas day, night and entire life
Cause next year I'll find that someone special
That special someone won't be you
And they'll be the one I give my heart to
my opinion: the first verse was mostly okay, i hate the chorus, i love the 2nd verse, the 3rd verse is just eh, the bridge isn't bad but i've written way better and the final chorus was just so messy tbh. over all, i rate it a 6.5/10.
yesterday i wrote a much more better song. i'd share it but there's a storyline surrounding it and i'm too tired to thoroughly explain my vivid vision of it. i'm literally half asleep rn. also the song follows a song i have not yet written.
ngl, this is weird for me. the last time i ever willingly shared my songs with anyone was when i was 13 and school wasn't yet shut down. i remember it was a couple days right before valentine's day. don't judge my shitty lyrics please :)
merry christmas eve everyone! 🎄
