I could do nothing but stare at their lifeless bodies

I could do nothing but stare at their lifeless bodies. The gold man and two soldiers stood around talking for some time. I didn't leave the shack. I looked down at my master's wife. Her eyes were wide open and still looking at me.

It sent a cold shiver down my spine. The sullen, blank gaze was the same I had seen so many days before... but different. My master laid crumbled on the ground in a pool of his own blood. It seemed justified in a way.

A twisted sort of way. I couldn't help feeling that I had been freed. If my master was dead did that mean I was no longer a slave? Did this mean I could live a life? I was so distracted that I had forgotten about the men.

I accidentally leaned forward slightly, making the door creak. All three men drew swords and looked in my direction. The gold man made a gesture and the two soldiers went around the side of the shack.

"If there's anyone in that shed, I suggest you come out now before my men bring you out." The gold man's voice was not at all like I expected. It wasn't a man's voice at all- it was a woman!

My first thought was that she could help me, but then I remembered what she did to my master and his wife and I faltered. If she could do that to any man, what would she do to me?

I didn't have any choice but to come out, so I slowly opened the door and timidly peeked out. My hair fell around my face, covering my vision. I crawled from behind the door and let it close behind me. The gold woman stared at me intently.

"Who are you?" Her voice was demanding and I couldn't help but answer.

"I-I was his slave." I had not spoken in so long I was surprised by the sound of my voice. My master had not allowed me to speak, as to assure I didn't complain or talk back. If I did speak... He would do awful things.

She turned to the man on the ground and made a noise of disgust. "Did he ever harm you? Rape you?" Her questions became more demanding and once again I was compelled to answer.

"Yes." My head hung low and I prayed I would just disappear. I heard the distinct sound of metal on metal and flinched back. I landed against the shack wall, whimpering. "Please don't hurt me. Please don't kill me" I begged with my hands in front of me, hoping the Gods would help me.

My eyes were glued shut as I waited for something. Anything. There were footsteps, getting closer and closer. I shut my eyes tighter hoping I was dreaming, hoping I would wake up.

I didn't open my eyes, even when I heard her voice right next to me. "There is nothing to fear now, child." I kept praying, hoping.

The Gods did not answer. Instead, the woman's voice.

"Open your eyes, everything is alright. The Mother of Light has sent us." Confusion filled my mind and I opened my eyes. I mustered the strength to unfold my fingers and look up at the woman in gold.
