SNEAK PEEK 😈

Afrah blinked, fighting back tears. She looked at her immediate younger sibling, Nazeer, hoping he would say something in her support. He always did. But this time, he was silent and his head hung. "Ethnicity?" Afrah asked in disbelief. "What does his origin have to do with this? Isn't he human?"

"It has a lot to do with this," Dr. Abdulmalik chimed in. "A lot." He emphasized. "On no account will you get married to a Hausa man. That would be over my dead body." With that said, he walked out of the house.

With unshed tears glistening in Afrah's eyes, she turned to her mother. "Did you hear what dad just said? What's wrong in getting married to a Hausa man?"

"Afrah," Mrs. Amina started. "Do you want a broken marriage? Is that what you want to achieve by getting married to that boy? It's no secret that those people are always so quick to divorce their wives."

"The fact that some of them are like that, does not mean all Hausa men are like that! Jameel is different. He will never divorce me because he loves me a lot."

"I'm not insinuating he doesn't." She shook her head. "He might love you a lot as you claim, but that won't be enough reason for him to not divorce you when a situation arises. I'm your mother. I'd never want the worst for you. I won't sit back and watch you ruin your life because of the stupid love you have for that man. It isn't going to happen. The earlier you accept that, the better it would be for you."

Afrah shook her head, adamantly. "You're saying all these right now because you haven't met him, mum. Please just give him a chance to prove himself to you. You're going to like h—"

"There is nothing," Mrs. Amina cut her off. "Absolutely nothing you can do to make me or your father change our minds about him. He's Hausa and that is a red flag. It can't be changed. Get yourself a Nupe man to get married to. And mind you, he must also be from Kutigi. A Nupe man from any other village asides ours won't be accepted either."

"This must be a silly joke," Afrah muttered underneath her breath.
