It wasn't until the winter that Iris finally returned the boy's smiles. The boy never gave up on smiling at her, at gazing at her. It was as if he wanted to let her know he was interested in her.

And how could he not be? Iris was different from anyone the boy had seen in his life. All the other girls would always pretend to be someone they were not with their big fake smiles and stupid lies.

Iris was simply herself.

And who else she could be? As much as she disliked her true self, there was no one else she could pretend to be. Iris was a poor liar and lacked the confidence other girls would muster up to come across as different people. Iris wasn't skilled enough to wear a mask in front of the world.
