-Christian's P.O.V-
My eyes open instantly at the sound of light ripping through the sky. I shoot up, making the covers fall off of me. I search the room in a panicked state.
Where's-
"Christian," a voice calls to my right.
I spin around and come eye to eye with Kaydan.
"Are you-" the rest of his sentence is drowned out by the screaming of the sky.
I inwardly jolt then casually wrap my arms around each other. "Can you say that again?" I ask as calmly as possible.
He reaches out to me and rests his hand on my shoulder. "I asked if you were okay."
I nod furiously. "Yeah. J-Just cold."
He pulls the covers over my legs and gets up.
I reach out and grab his wrist.
He turns to look at me. "What?"
I swallow silently. "Where are you going?" "To get more blankets for you."
"I'm not r-really that-"
"It won't even take long."
The room floods with light then quickly empties, leaving enough space for the thunder to slip in.
I tighten my grip on his wrist. "I'm not cold."
-Kaydan's P.O.V-
The room is completely silent other than the rain relentlessly pounding against the roof, seeming to fall faster and harder every second.
I feel him shaking through his hold on my wrist. I look away from him and chuckle slightly. "You scared?" I joke trying to lighten the mood.
He doesn't respond.
Shit.
I pry his hand off of my wrist, so that he's now holding onto my hand, then get back into the bed with him. "Well..." I begin lowly, "which part of it is scary?"
I sense him shrug before he answers, "L- Lightning. Lightning and Thunder."
"Easy fix!" I exclaim laying on my back.
Seconds pass before he does the same.
I turn to face him not noticing he was already looking at me. "O-Okay. Here!" I place a pillow over his head and stare at the fluffy mount triumphantly. Lightning flashes, and the thunder follows.
He doesn't say anything for awhile. When he finally does it comes out muffled.
"What?"
He lifts the pillow so that I can barely hear him. "I said I don't like it."
"Why not? I know it's not much but-"
"Because I can't see you," he answers without letting me finish.
"Y-Yeah, but it's dark anyway!"
He moves his hand so that our fingers intertwine and quickly whispers, "Sorry."
I slowly nudge my way under the pillow with my face and accidentally bump into his nose with mine. "My bad!"
He moves closer to me and rests his forehead against mine. "I don't mind it."
The rain on the roof has become slightly dulled, and I can feel his breath on my lips. I can't see a thing and start to slowly lull back into sleep.
"Kaydan," he says bringing my focus back. "Hmm?"
"I can't really breathe."
I take a deep breath- well, more like struggle to take a deep breath- and sit up knocking the pillow off of our heads.
The sound of the rain comes back into full throttle, and a low thunder sounds off in the distance.
Christian sits up after me and rests his head in the crook of my neck.
I reach for his phone and check the time. It's around 2, but looks like it is 11 at night. There is also a server tornado warning that flashes across his phone. I close it and place it under my pillow then ask, "Do you want to try going back to sleep?"
He shakes his head.
"Are you hungry?"
He shakes his head again.
"Do you want me to turn on a light?"
He nods before moving his head off my shoulder.
I reach over and flick the lamp switch. Nothing.
I flick it three more times.
The darkness only seems to grow stronger.
I return to my original position and grab his phone, then activate the flash light. "Looks like the power is down."
He looks up at me with his eyes slightly glazed over. "Please tell me that's a joke."
"I wish I could."
When lightning appears again the bed jolts beside me.
"I hate this," he mumbles snuggling closer.
"It should blow over soon," I respond wrapping the blanket over our shoulders.
What can I do to make him ignore the storm?
An idea quickly pops into my head, but I don't like it.
I'm not even ready for that yet! That would be awful!
I still feel him shaking lightly against me.
"I-I play guitar!" The words force their way out of my mouth.
I guess I'm ready now.
"Huh?"
"Wanna hear a song?" "K-Kaydan-"
"I'll play you a song!" I stand, leaving the blanket behind, and walk into my closet. I grab my guitar by the neck and bring it out. I sit across from him on the bed's corner and shakily strum the strings.
Of course it wouldn't be harder to strum with a splint...
He scoots closer to me and wraps the blanket tighter around himself. "You really don't have to."
"I told you I can play, and this is sorta the perfect time to prove it!"
He looks over to the window.
I reach out and ruffle his hair saying, "My face is over here, stupid."
He returns his gaze to me. "Sorry."
He must really be scared if he let me get away with calling him stupid...
I grin. "Just give me the name of a song."
A minute passes before he shrugs.
"You can't think of a single song?" I ask baffled.
"I'm kind of distracted."
As if eavesdropping on our conversation, the lightning flashes and the thunder practically shakes the ground.
He shuts his eyes and brings his knees up to his chin.
I fill my lungs with air to steady my nerves. "You can't complain about the song then."
"I won't."
"Promise?"
"I won't!" He only says louder.
I begin to play and part my lips, "Let's go back, back to the beginning." I move my fingers accordingly to change the chords as the song progresses. I smile wider when I realize he hasn't recognized the song yet.
He stares at me in silence listening.
I let the last cord I play draw out before saying, "Sing along if you know the words."
"I don't-"
I belt out before he could finish his sentence. "Let the rain fall down, and wake my dreams! Let it wash away my sanity!"
"Are you serious?" He groans as I continue to sing.
"Cause I wanna feel the thunder," I stop suddenly and glance at him.
His eyes go wide before he shakes his head furiously. "Absolutely not."
I only repeat my sentence louder, "Cause I wanna feel the thunder-"
"Kaydan."
"CAUSE I WANNA FEEL THE THUN-"
He throws the blanket over his head and shouts back at me, "-I WANNA SCREAM!"
"LET THE RAIN FALL DOWN, I'M COMING CLEAN!" We join together at the end.
I laugh hard. "My god that was beautiful! You actually have a great voice!"
"Shut up," he barely squeaks.
"Should I keep going?" I manage to say when I finally calm down.
He doesn't reply.
"If you don't say no, I'm going to think it's okay you know," I mock watching the lightning flash outside.
Still nothing.
Mission success...
I return to my strumming with a smile plastered to my face, "I'm coming clean."
An hour had almost pasted before Christian had fallen back to sleep.
He was curled into a ball underneath the covers with his head resting on my lap.
I continue to mess with his hair watching the rain slide down the window.
I would've never guessed his weakness was lightning and thunder...can't forget about heights either...
I look down at his sleeping face. "What else is there to learn about you?" I whisper more to myself.
His phone vibrates underneath my pillow, and I carefully reach over to retrieve it. There was a text from Addison.
Addison: Dude, where are you?
I glance between Christian and his phone.
I can play Christian! No problem!
I'm with Kaydan. What of it?
Addison: It's raining. REALLY hard.
Yeah, I know. Pretty scary, right?
Addison: ...I'm not buying it. I'm coming over.
Please don't!
Addison: Definitely coming over.
I quickly throw the phone onto my pillow hoping to wash away all the evidence.
Damn it, I panicked! Maybe Christian locked the door when he-
"Hey!" I hear a voice yell from the front of my apartment.
I guess not...
"Christian," she continues to yell.
I shush her loudly.
She closes the door, I hear her lock it, and makes her way to my bedroom. "Well, well, well, look at what we've got here," she hums.
"Christian is asleep, so I would appreciate it if you'd be a little quieter," I say with a straight face.
Childhood friend or not, I still didn't like her.
"So you're playing father now?" She smirks. "Cute."
"Can I help you with something?"
"I'm taking Christian back," she states reaching out to grab him.
I shield him by pushing her hand away. "Why?"
"Because he's terrified of-"
"Lightning and thunder. I know."
"Once he wakes up it's impossible to get him to go back to sleep. There's a routine we go through every time, and I don't think you'd be capable of-"
"He went back to sleep over half an hour ago."
Her eyes slightly widen, but she tried to mask her shock. "Huh...what did you do?"
I shrug. "Sang a little." "That's it?" She scoffs aloud. I put my fingers to my lips.
She rolls her eyes at me toning down her voice, "I don't think he's going to stay asleep for long with only singing."
"Then I'll just try something else if he wakes up."
"Don't you mean when?"
I inhale silently. "Look Addison-"
"Ms. Brown," she interrupts.
"Addison-"
"You don't like me very much, do you?"
"...Regardless of my feelings towards you, I think our main concern is Christian right now."
"Don't lump me together with you."
"I'm not-"
"If anything I can take care of him a lot better than you can!"
"I never said-"
"What makes you think you have what it takes to make him happy anyway? Do you honestly think-"
"I don't know!" I yell stopping her.
Christian squirms around in my lap and tenses his face, causing Addison and me to hold our breaths.
I reach out and stroke his cheek softly, returning his face to a relaxed expression. I look back up at Addison. "I don't know, but that doesn't mean I'm not going to try."
She glares at me. "This doesn't mean that you've won."
"The thought never crossed my mind," I breathe.
She takes one last glance at Christian, a glance filled with a kind of longing, and exits my room. I hear the door open then slam, making Christian turn up to face me. I quickly place my hand over his eyes so he is blind to the storm. "Yes, Christian?"
"What was that?"
"Nothing, you're dreaming."
It goes quiet for a while. "...Oh," is all he manages to say.
I lean over and plant a kiss on his forehead. "See? It's a dream."
"...Oh..." he says softer, drifting back to sleep.
I wait a minute longer before moving my hand. His eyes remain closed, and his lips are slightly parted, allowing him to snore softly. I gently close his mouth to stop his sounds, and brush a few of his hair follicles to the side. An image of Addison's face rushes into my mind as I continue to play with his hair.
I wonder it feels to be looked at like that...
