A strong breeze ran down the busy street, rustling leaves and throwing them up into the crisp morning air. The smell of the city was strong as people passed by, some of them muttered various obscenities while others walked in a brisk silence, however they all shared the same sense of urgency.
A knitted scarf hung loosely around my neck, the bright red wool contrasting against the various shades of muted greys of passer-by's clothing. It wasn't much but it gave me hope of having even the smallest shred of individuality, no matter how insignificant it seemed to others.
It had been a long time since I had seen my mother, I couldn't settle on a single feeling. I was absolutely enamoured with the idea of meeting her face to face after the many months we had spent apart and yet there was also a sense of dread as to what she would say when she saw me. Perhaps she would greet me with disappointment, I hadn't managed to work up the courage to say goodbye before leaving after all. Although after a few upsetting outcomes rushed through my mind I simply hoped that she had missed me as much as I had missed her and that that would be apparent in her actions.
Placing my hands into my pockets, I walked up to the edge of the pier, rusting iron bars separated me from a fall into the familiar waters. I had missed the feeling of the sea breeze against my face.
Wave after wave crashed against the coarse wall of rocks, showering sea spray over those who walked by at the wrong time. I glanced down to my wrist watch then back up to the gulls circling around in the air.
I sat and waited, watching them for a while. They would soar around in groups almost as if they were dancing, dipping downwards before pulling back up at the last minute, twisting and turning between one another.
The sky had begun to turn a darker shade of grey by the time I glanced at my watch once again, it was by that time that I had started to wonder whether i had come to the right place. After checking my mothers letter for confirmation I accepted that she was just running late and went back to watching my new-found feathery friends.
After repeating this course of action several times over I began to grow worried, by which time it was fairly late in the day.
A few people still walked around near the main road in the distance, although most of them seemed fairly disgruntled, bottles in hand, without much clear sense as to where they were or where they were going.
A few of them stumbled towards me lazily as I walked by, slurring a couple of meaningless compliments, growing angry as I ignored their advances. A sudden shattering noise clashed by my feet causing me to jump, glass littered the floor around me as shouting began to ensue. Growing more anxious I urged my legs to carry on down the road at a faster pace, and yet the angry noises continued to follow after me.
'Come on Darling, we just wanna talk' A raspy voice cooed from beside me.
'Please get away from me.' I felt my voice break in my throat as I pleaded that the group should leave me be, unsurprisingly they took little notice.
I felt a hand grab hold of my arm, turning me around roughly.
'Let go of me' I shouted out, trying to be as demanding as possible.
The men merely laughed as I attempted to struggle free of their grasps. Their hands roamed around my body, removing a few items of clothing. I had begun to cry uncontrollably as I feared what was to come. Mumbles erupted around me as their grasps loosened, causing me to fall to the floor. A few scatterings of steps left me confused as I looked up. A hand, extended out towards me.
'Are you alright?' A smooth voice, belonging to a young looking man, questioned me cautiously.
Two others stood beside of me, their expressions sympathetic.
Hesitantly taking his hand I was pulled up to my feet, giving me the chance to look at the other two men properly. They both adorned the same high end clothing although their tastes were visibly different. The first wore a deep blue suit, the second stood in a brown coat, a bowtie neatly placed around his collared neck.
'I'm Michael,' he let go of my hand, picking up my scarf and offering it to me.
