I woke up to a bright light and a group of faces staring down at me. My first instinct was panic. Arguably not an unreasonable reaction when someone is thrown into a completely new situation, surrounded by strangers staring at you. I tried to stand but my legs were shaky, as if they hadn't been used in a while.
Grabbing onto the closest object for support, which happened to be a wooden box, I clambered to my feet. I looked up again only to be met with even more confused expressions. They looked on with curiosity as I scanned the area, searching for anything to deem familiar. Nothing.
After a few moments of them mumbling to each other I heard a thud of feet landing next to me. A boy with brown eyes and messy hair stood beside me, hand outstretched. I stood still for a while, unsure of his intentions until he spoke, his voice soft and non-threatening, 'You'll be alright Greenie, we aren't gonna hurt you.' He offered a warm smile as I took his hand.
He led me to the edge of the box where a few of the other surrounding boys helped me out. I looked around yet again, this time getting a full view of the place. Towering grey walls encompassed the large field-like area that we stood in, woodland scattered around that grew thicker as it neared said walls. A small village like area constructed of wooden beams and beige coloured fabrics stood not too far from where we were gathered. A few figures weaved in and out of the buildings, sometimes stopping to turn and look at us. I felt steady on my legs again as I took a few slow steps away from the group. Some of the boys had turned their backs to me in order to help the messy haired boy out of the box. I looked to the forest once more, then back to the occupied boys.
I felt my legs move on their own as I sprinted towards the treeline. Behind me I heard the shouts of the startled bunch and the pounding of footsteps following me.
'SHE'S RUNNING'. Someone shouted angrily.
'GET HER MINHO!' Another one of them yelled.
I knew that if I slowed down now they would simply catch up and so I urged my body to keep moving until I felt the grass start to thin and a shade above my head. A few of them still kept pace behind me as I darted between branches and roots however soon enough I had lost them between the trees.
I ran for a long time before my pace started to slow, my breath catching up to me as I stopped completely.
A million questions danced through my mind, however one of them stuck completely.
Where am I?
That thought lingered in my mind for hours, and as the time passed by so did groups of boys, they called out for me only they didn't use my name. What was my name? It certainly wasn't Greenie, though in all honesty I couldn't know that for sure.
After wandering for what felt like forever I fell to my knees, resting my back against an upturned tree root, I sat watching and listening for a good while. Shadows moved in the distance and a variety of voices called out various things. Time went on and on before the callings finally stopped, eventually I calmed enough to close my eyes for a while.
I was awoken to a cold wind flowing against me, through my hair and against my skin.
I don't know how much time had passed but the sky had grown darker, a mix of grey and purple, the sun was beginning to sink and the light was starting to fade. I sat straight and looked around for any sign of life. Nothing, not for a while anyway. The shouting came back soon enough though, accompanied by the sound of rustling steps in the dried out foliage. My eyes darted towards the sounds as I was met with a tall figure standing not too far from me. At first sight I was intent on running however once their voice called out to me, tainted with worry I was struck with hesitation.
'Please don't run away. ' He said, that same voice from before. He stepped closer, in his hand he held a light that swayed by his side. 'We were worried you went into the maze.' He said, a hint of relief in his voice.
'The maze?' I asked, an obvious curiosity seeping into my words.
'So you can talk then,' he laughed jokingly, edging his way towards me, a smile never leaving his face. 'Why don't you come back with me and I can explain everything.' He was so close now that had he of reached out he could have touched me.
I may not have known who he was but I trusted him more than anyone else i had met so far. His voice was so familiar and yet I had no recollection of ever having heard it before.
Hesitantly I reached out a hand towards his, and as I did so he took it in his own with that same warm smile.
