Eydis was a simplistic person, very routine. She lived at home with her husky, Bentley, and worked at a law firm in upstate New Jersey. Her daily routines never changed; take Bentley on a mile run every morning, get coffee, go to work, come home, watch a rerun on television, go to bed. Start over again the next day.
That changed when she met her best friend, Maria Hill. The two women had met during the 2012 attack on New York; the hole in the sky, letting down alien ships and aliens on floating jet skis. Maria had been the one to save her life, pulling her out from under a car that had flipped on top of her. Since then, Eydis had yet to repay Maria, so she told her that she would spend the rest of her life trying. Little did she know, it was in the form of a friendship.
The two often spoke about soulmates, who theirs were, if they had met and how, how they felt when they finally saw color for the first time. Maria had met her husband, Dean, about 5 years prior to their meeting. They had since gotten married and were planning on having little Hills running around in the next year or two. Maria said it was like a piece of her that she didn’t know was missing, was found. Like adding gas to a fire, or finding that missing puzzle piece you thought you’d found years ago. She said it felt like home, and would describe all the colors in vibrant detail to her best friend, who had yet to meet her flame.
Eydis had given up on the idea of a soulmate, and decided if it were to happen, it would in its own time, so she should just live the life she has now and enjoy it while she can. Besides, she had Bentley, she didn’t need anyone else. It would have been nice to know what color her eyes were though, and her favorite top. What Maria’s hair color was, and what color her favorite necklace was. Nevertheless, she digressed, and went along her life as usual.
Until the day Maria had called her in a panic.
“Eydis?! Are you alright?” Maria asked, trying to keep her breathing steady, acting like she wasn’t about to have a panic attack.
“Maria? Yeah, I’m fine, just at work. Why? What’s wrong?” Eydis asked curiously, worried about her friend.
“Good, can you leave work? It’s urgent,” she told her friend, sternly.
Stunned, Eydis mutters, “uh, yeah, I, uh, I’ll leave now. Is there somewhere I can meet you?”
“Do you know where the Avengers tower is?”
“I think so, do you want me to meet you there? Is everything okay?” Eydis sighed, she hoped it wasn’t anything awful.
“I’ll tell you everything when you get here, just get here now,” she huffed and hung up the phone.
Muttering aloud, “alright, miss pissy pants, I’ll get there n-” she stopped at the sight of the head attorney coming into her office. “Hello, Mr. Peters.”
“Eydis.” He smiles at her, sitting across from her.
“What can I do for you?” she smiles back.
“I just received an email from your friend, Maria,” he sighs.
“I am so sorr-” Eydis began, but was quickly cut off by the man in the suit.
He held his hand up and spoke, “do not apologize, Eydis. You’ve worked hard for us these past few years. I’ll make sure you’re taken care of as well. Your friend said you would need to be out of the office for a few weeks, and you’re gonna go. It sounded urgent, and like any good boss, I’m insisting you go.”
Eydis’s smile quickly faded, as she realized this may be more urgent than Maria had let on.
“Thank you, I’ll uh, I’ll head out now then,” she breathed, and gathered her belongings as she headed out the door.
