Piper came stumbling out the door at full speed. Her destination was unknown to everyone even herself. Her brother Isaac had already left on his bike and her dad was fast approaching on her heels. She wanted to call out to him but Isaac had already turned the corner of the street by the time she'd reached the road.

Groaning in frustration and not even caring about the downpour of rain Piper sat down on the sidewalk. Thinking back to how just 20 minutes ago her night had been uneventful. She was looking forward to reading a book after dinner but it seems that wouldn't be happening tonight.

"Quite sitting on the ground and get back in the house Piper," yelled John Lahey as he tried his best to be heard over the onslaught of rain. It was coming down in slanted rows now. To focused on catching up with Isaac, John jumped into the car without waiting to see if she obeyed. The tires kicked up water as he sped off in the pouring rain.

Piper didn't know what to think about the events that had transpired just minutes before in the dining room. It was an average night for the Lahey's. Her father and brother had come home late from a shift at the cemetery. She'd already had dinner cooked and served on the table. Dinners were normally quiet affairs. Neither sibling wanting to say anything to trigger their father into one of his infamous rages.

However, tonight was different. Grades had just been updated which meant her father would want to know. Isaac had already told his sister earlier that day that he was failing chemistry. Unable to help her brother in time they both knew that tonight would end unpleasantly.

Accepting the inevitable Piper sat down at the table waiting.

The sharp silence surrounding the dining table was killing her. She couldn't stand it but didn't have the guts to make small talk. They'd eaten almost the entire meal in silence when her father finally spoke.

"How are your grades, Piper?" He questioned in between bites of chicken. Piper had made grilled chicken with potatoes for dinner. She'd been mentally preparing herself since before dinner but still wasn't ready.

"I have all 'As' except for a 'B' in marine biology," Piper half mumbled in response.

"Stop mumbling!" snapped John Lahey.

Piper and Isaac jumped at the sudden rise in volume of their fathers voice. Piper less so than Isaac having learned her small voice triggered her father. He always thought she wasn't going to be successful for her lack of assertiveness.

After a tense silence, Isaac hesitantly spoke, "Um... so far it's an 'A' in French and a 'B' minus in Econ."

"Oh. What about chemistry?'

"I'm not sure. Uh, midterms are in a few days so it could go up," Isaac said nervously unwilling to tell his dad his grade. Piper sighed knowing what was about to happen.

"Well, what's it at now?"

"The grade?" Isaac asked while playing with a piece of bread his sister gave him. Having lost his appetite as soon as he started talking about grades.

"Uh, yeah." their dad said in a condescending tone.

"Uh. I'm not sure," the atmosphere in the room had suddenly gotten thicker. Piper had the sudden urge to leave the room. She could smell a confrontation coming any minute now.

Trying to diffuse the situation Piper asked "How was your day at work today, Dad?" Cringing as she did.

"Piper!" exclaimed John Lahey, "you don't speak to me unless I speak to you."
