there once was a boy,
the happiest you've ever seen,
most known for the scratches
that lay upon his knees.
his mind danced with sparkles in the sky,
and his heart was there too.
he built a ladder from flowers,
stairs out of rocks,
and a space ship out of plastic.
not once he accepted the night
as attainable as holding the lake in his palms,
and this would hold true,
when his eyes met the green,
that met the sky behind.
his skin, fragile and gentle,
was no match for the tree;
and yet, though he knew of the
chipping bark and dying leaves,
he hooked one arm around a branch,
and began his ascent.
it wasn't until dawn did he make it to the top,
and looked out at the sky,
and wondered what had gone wrong.
for he had been climbing so long,
he hadn't noticed;
the flowers had died,
the rocks were buried,
and the plastic had melted the ground.
balls of fire rained down from the sky,
exploding in fits of rage,
and the boy—too scared to climb down,
joined it
