~Kirsten's point of view~

I knew it would be a few hours before Zane woke up. Once they removed the intubation. I didn't expect it to be as long as it has. It's been six hours. The door opens, I look up. It's Sam. I don't want to deal with him right now. I am lonely, though. I'm not going to turn him away.

Sam: "Hey."

Kirsten: "Hi Sam. What are you doing here?"

Sam: "I wanted to see you."

He walks over and checks out Zane.

Kirsten: "Does it normally take this long? It hasn't in the past. I'm concerned."

Sam: "Sometimes."

He sits down next to me.

Kirsten: "Why aren't you working?"

Sam: "It's five. We're done for the day."

Kirsten: "Oh."

Sam: "Do you mind if I hang out for a bit?"

I don't want to be rude. I see that he really does care. I just can't with him. He tore my heart to pieces; I won't let him do it again.

Kirsten: "That's fine."

Neither of us says anything. It's comfortable silence.

I must have drifted off to sleep. I wake up to the sweetest sound ever.

Zane: "Mama?"

Kirsten: "I'm here."

Sam is still here. I guess I had moved in my sleep. My head is against the arm of the couch, and my legs are over Sam.

Kirsten: "I'm sorry."

Sam: "Don't be. I know you're exhausted. I could tell earlier."

I move and go to Zane.

Kirsten: "Do you want some water?"

Zane shakes his head yes.

Sam: "I'll go get it."

Kirsten: "You don't have to stay, Sam."

Sam: "I want to be here."

Kirsten: "I don't want you to feel obligated."

Sam: "I don't. I really want to be here."

Kirsten: "Ok."

He goes and gets the water. When he comes back, he helps Zane sit up and drink the water.

Sam: "When was the last time you held him?"

Kirsten: "The day we came in here."

Sam: "Go sit."

Kirsten: "Why?"

Sam: "Just do it, please."

Kirsten: "Ok."

I don't argue.

I go sit on the couch. He brings me Zane's water; I see him moving things all around the bed. He leans and whispers something to Zane. Zane shakes his head yes; he moves a few more things.
