The next day when I woke up I was really hoping that Matt would be at school. I could see why he wouldn't want to be, but I still really hoped he was.
I got up and quickly got dressed before going to the kitchen for breakfast.
"Hey sweetie." My mom said.
"Hi." I said with a small smile.
"How are you today?"
I shrugged.
"I'm fine."
I ate quickly before we left for school.
When I got there I practically jumped out of the car when I saw Matt sitting on a bench.
I ran over to it.
He looked up at me and smiled.
"Hey!"
I smiled.
"Hi!"
He stood up.
"You know I was waiting for you right?" He said.
I smiled happily and nodded.
He was wearing a navy blue hoodie with Jeans and a pair of thick black glasses with green on the sides.
"I really like your Glasses." I said.
He looked confused but smiled.
"Really? Usually people make fun of them."
I nodded.
"They're cute."
"Thanks." He said.
"You're welcome." I said.
We walked to our lockers before we heard the bell ring.
"See you after class!" I said.
He nodded.
And then we went to class.
:::::::::::::::::::
After class I met Matt at his locker.
He was going through everything in it.
"What are you doing?" I asked.
He looked over at me and laughed before he kept going. Then he smiled and looked back over.
"I new I had a mint in here." He said, tossing a peppermint in the air and then catching it.
I laughed.
"All that for a mint?"
He laughed.
"Don't hate. Congratulate."
I smiled.
"Fine then, congratulations."
"Thank you." He said laughing.
We started walking down the hallway.
Suddenly everything was awkward.
Most people were just going on about their business but a couple people were looking over and whispering.
And then it went wrong.
There was a guy, probably a senior, walking by us.
He stuck his foot out in front of Matt at the last second causing him to trip and fall, face down on the floor.
Everybody stopped talking and looked over before they started laughing.
"Wow kid, can't even walk." The senior guy said loudly.
Causing another roar of laughter.
I took a deep breath.
"He can walk. Maybe it'd help if you didn't trip him!" I said, equally as loud.
Everybody oohed.
He looked angry.
"Look little girl, you wanna defend your dorky idiot boyfriend, go ahead. But don't lie about me."
I felt myself heat up.
"First, I'm not lying. Second, he's not an idiot. Third, he's not my boyfriend, but I'd way rather be his girlfriend than yours."
He kicked Matt back down as he tried to get up.
"Ok babe, have fun with this stupid ugly piece of dirt." He said quietly.
Everyone was silent.
"Get a life jerk." I said between my teeth as I bent down to help Matt up.
He grabbed my hand and stood up.
Senior gave us both a dirty look before walking away.
Everyone was staring at us.
I took a deep breath and looked at Matt.
He looked absolutely heartbroken.
"I'm just gonna go home." He said softly.
I nodded.
"I'll come with you."
I grabbed my phone and texted my mom before walking with Matt out the door.
We just walked in silence for a few minutes.
Neither one of us knowing what to say.
It was raining a little bit and it was gray and cold out.
I started to shiver a little bit.
Matt looked over at me for a minute before he took off his hoodie and handed it to me.
"I'm okay." I said.
He shook his head.
"No, you shouldn't have to be walking out here in the rain with me. Take it." He said softly.
I sighed and took it.
"Thanks." I said.
He nodded.
The whole thing kept replaying through my head.
"Are you okay?" I asked softly.
"I'm fine." He said softly.
I stopped and put my hand on his shoulder.
"You don't have to do that." I said.
He sighed and shrugged.
I gave him a hug.
"He said I was dirt." He whispered.
I felt a tear slip down my cheek.
"You're not."
I pulled away and grabbed his hand.
"It hurts now, but it'll get better." I said softly.
"People have been telling me that for years, it just seems I don't matter so it doesn't get better with me." He said with a frown.
I smiled a little bit.
"You're the hi-light of my life. You matter."
I saw happiness flash in his eyes.
"Really?"
I nodded.
He jumped forward a gave me a tight hug.
"Thank you."
He pulled away with a smile.
"You have no idea how much that means to me."
I smiled.
"Just promise you won't let that bother you."
He nodded.
"I'll try."
And then he grabbed my hand and we resumed walking. After about an hour and a half we decided to get a bus since it was still six miles home.
When we got to his house I stayed for dinner. And it turned out the rest of his family was just as sweet as him.
Then I left and made my way home, in the dark. Knowing today probably wouldn't be a one time thing.
But Hoping and praying school would be better tomorrow.
