Bramble's Poem

"When Bramble first came to Devon's Cove High, she became enemies with the most popular kids there. She was rich and... Beautiful. And they hated it. They threatened everyone, and I know it's not an excuse, but they are terrifying, and they wanted everyone to treat her like garbage. A lot of people did. But others, like my brother and I," She looks over at the boy next to her, "did as little as we could. The most we've done was stand there. Because of our refusal, we got beat up. But we wouldn't change our decision because it wasn't right what they were doing to her. We've tried to get them to stop, we even told the teachers and staff. No one would listen. We are sorry we didn't do more to help. We know that saying sorry isn't going to bring her back or make things right, but we thought you should know," The girl whispers the last part and I see a tear slide down her cheek. Then the boy begins talking.

"Ever since the day it started, I've tried to help her as much as I could. I left notes in her locker or where she'd find them, either with encouraging words or warning her about something someone was planning to do. After about a week or two of me leaving notes, she started leaving notes back. We talked a bit that way, but she was always scared I was playing her. But after a few weeks she began to trust me. We never met in person, she was too scared to. And the truth is, I fell in love with her. The last note I got from her scared the crap out of me. It was a poem she must've written. By the time I found it, it was already too late. The note was," he pauses, opening up a folded piece of paper that looks like it's been folded and unfolded multiple times. "This was the note I found on my locker. She's never left one there before, because she didn't know who I was. Or so I thought... Anyways, the note read:
Hello?
Can you hear me?
Do you even care?
Are you listening?
Just listen for once.
Do you not see the marks on my arm?
Hear the pain in my voice?
I'm all alone and you don't care!
No one does.
This is pointless.
Why am I here?
Don't try to stop me.
I've made up my mind.
And you failed me.
But I love you.
It'll be too late, so just stop.
Tomorrow, I'll be gone.
Gone from this world.
Dead on the floor.
Did you hear me now?'" He stops as tears start falling from his eyes. After he takes a deep breath, he turns over the paper. "'P.S. You didn't fail me, Ryder. Yes, I know who you are. I have for a while now. I just didn't want things to change and turn out horrible for you. Thank you for being so kind and helpful towards me. I'll remember what you've done for me until my last breath—which will be soon. Thank you for being my friend. I hope you live a wonderful life, Ry.
With love,
Bramble Elliot, xoxoxo'" At this point, he's bawling and I look beside me to see Ella with her hands covering her mouth with big fat tears streaming down her cheeks. The girl beside Ryder, his sister, whispers in his ear before leading him back to their seats. How he kept himself from crying and his voice from shaking for that long is a mystery to me.

There are a few more people who go up, but I can't focus on that. My mind's focused on what Ryder said. If Bramble said that, she must really care for him.

I hope you are with us now my beautiful angel. I hope you see how much we care. I love you Bramble. We all do.
