"What? Reject him?"

"I'm guessing that's a no." She glanced back at Keefe. "What happened to Funkyhair, then?"

"Long story. I'll explain when Forkle is here."

"What will you explain when I'm here?" Mr. Forkle stood in the doorway, watching as Duncan stumbled through. "Something went wrong, I'm guessing?"

"We were ambushed." Sophie said briefly. She sat down, but Keefe remained standing, going immediately to the window. His back faced them.

She explained what happened. "As soon as I heard his words I went into some... trance."

She shivered.

As soon as she had heard his words, she'd been snapped back to the attack.

Edaline screaming.

The man twisting the knife in her side.

Sophie blinked rapidly, dispelling the images in her mind and continued, "I had taken off my gloves, so when I didn't respond, Keefe used my enhancing and..." Sophie hesitated, looking at Keefe.

He turned slowly, keeping his eyes on the ground.

"If it's okay with you guys, I'm going to go to my room."

Mr. Forkle shot Sophie a look, but nodded anyways.

"He, uh, he yelled stop and, well, they stopped. They stopped breathing, their hearts stopped, everything stopped." Sophie said quietly.

"And he feels guilty?" Sandor asked, his expression skeptical.

"What do you think? His mom gave him an ability he didn't want, and he used that ability to kill other beings."

"They're evil,"

"So? Keefe always blames himself for everything. And he's an Empath. He feels everything." Sophie jesitated. "Plus..."

"What?" Mr. Forkle asked.

"He... when he yelled stop. Everything and everyone in the earshot... stopped. Including me."

"He killed you?" Sandor asked, already standing up.

Sophie talked quickly, "He didn't mean to. Then... well, he brought me back, I guess. One second it was dark, and I couldn't fell anything, the next he was looking down at me. And he blames himself. I tried to tell him that it was an accident, but I don't think he believed it."

"I want you to get checked out by Elwin tomorrow." Sandor said, right when Mr. Forkle asked, "How many Neverseen members?"

"I'll get to Elwin tomorrow. And at least fifteen. There were others, which is why we had to leave, bringing these two along." Sophie said, gesturing to Dinla and Duncan.

"Someone tipped them off," Dinla said.

Duncan sat up. "I still think it was the Sencen guy. His mother is Lady Gisela."

Sophie glared at him. The sympathy she had previously felt for him disappeared completely. "It's not Keefe's fault that his mother is a psychopath and a jerk."

"I'm just saying that he has loyalties in the Neverseen." Duncan protested.

"And also several in the Black Swan," Ro refuted, also looking annoyed with Duncan.

Sophie seized her words eagerly. "Exactly."

Duncan looked like he was going to argue more, but Mr. Forkle raised his hand.
"It's true. At one time, his intentions were questionable," Sophie opened her mouth, but Mr. Forkle forestalled her. "And yes, Ms. Foster, I am aware that he joined to be a Double Agent. But since then, Mr. Sencen had been an invaluable member of the Black Swan. Like the princess said, he has many loyalties in our group." He turned his gaze to Sophie.
