Chapter 16: The Attempt

Start from the beginning

I make my way to the kitchenette where I select a bottle of red wine. I pour two glasses of wine, lacing one of them with the crushed sleeping pills. After I've mixed enough sedative into his glass, I close the container.

"Mia?" Spencer calls out and I hear his footsteps thumping down the stairs.

Panic sets me into motion and I quickly spill the remainder of the sedative down the drain before discarding the container into the trash can underneath the sink.

I quickly turn around to see him emerge from the stairs... without a shirt.

"Did I spook you?" he chuckles, his abs glistening in the sun.

"Yeah..." I trail off.

"I poured you a glass of wine," I extend the wine glass to him and he takes it. My heart beats out of my chest as I watch him take a sip.

"Thank you, baby," he smiles and kisses my cheek. "Let's go outside." He takes my hand and we head outside.

When we get to the lounge chairs, he sits himself down onto a circular chaise lounge before unexpectedly pulling me onto his lap. In the process, I spill my glass of wine all over us.

"Spencer!" I reprimand.

"Sorry, baby. We can share mine."

"No!" I shout without even thinking. "I mean... I poured that glass just for you. I can get another one for myself." I try to stand up but his arms stay wrapped around my middle.

"Don't leave," he groans into my neck. I look back at him and  my heart stops for a moment. Amongst my hatred for what this man has done to me, I have forgotten how beautiful he truly is. I stare back at him almost in awe. His olive skin glows in the sunlight and the wind ruffle his floppy blonde locks. His bone structure is sharp and for a moment I consider touching his jawline to see if it actually would cut me. Most distracting of all, his twinkling emerald eyes plead for me to stay, and I find myself unable to say no.

"Okay, fine, but let me go grab myself another glass of wine first."

"Fine," he mutters before taking a sip of his drugged wine. When I come back with a new glass for myself, I notice his glass is already empty. I'm not sure if I'm happy that the drugs are in his system or if I'm a little worried that he ingested them all at once.

"Wow that was fast. Did you chug the wine?"

"Yes, baby. You poured it just for me and I got a little excited. Would you get me another?" he asks and I refill his glass again with normal wine.

When I get back, he again pulls me onto his lap and kisses my shoulder over and over again.

We sit there for the next fifteen minutes, sipping on our wine. After a while, Spencer's movements start to get messy and I can tell the drugs must be setting in.

"Baby, I don't feel so good," he says, his head buried in my shoulder. I say nothing, instead opting to pat his back to give him some sort of comfort.

"I think I drank too much too fast. I feel so... disorien-tated."

I can't help but chuckle. "Spence, 'disorientated' isn't a word. Why don't you rest for a little while? Maybe sleep will help you recover."

He nods before setting me down next to him and laying his head in my lap. After a few short minutes, he's sound asleep and I peel myself off of him.

I look back at him and am caught off guard. He lies on the chair peacefully asleep. My heart squeezes in my chest and I feel a twinge of guilt. He's so beautiful with a handsome face, sculpted body, and olive skin. He appears so weak and helpless laying there unconscious. His face is so calm and serene, as if he could do no harm. I can't help but blush as I reflect on the man I fell in love with. Sound asleep, Spencer is the same man who proposed to me all those months ago.

Taking a deep breath, I remind myself that this man lied to me, tricked me into marrying him, kidnapped me, threatened my family, and treated me like a sex slave.

I enter the indoor portion of the boat, shutting the screen door behind me before taking my bag and heading up to the captain's section.

Using the map and boating manual, I manage to steer the boat. The initial few minutes are terrifying as I have no idea what I'm doing, but after a few minutes I get ahold of my bearings and eventually gain control of the boat.

Every so often, I make sure to look down at the deck below to make sure that Spencer is still sound asleep which he is.

After twenty or so minutes, a grouping of islands are in sight and I thank my lucky stars I was heading in the correct direction and that the ocean was super flat today. Using the map, I locate the island that I believe to be the Bonderman private estate.

I notice how this island is slightly smaller than Spencer's and it also has less trees. It's made up of several houses and then a mansion at the end. The houses appear luxurious and expensive. I drive as close to it as possible before deciding to make a swim for it.

I stash the map and boating manual back inside my tote bag, which I hide underneath the bed in the bedroom to avoid giving Spencer any clues as to where I went. I strip down to my bikini before heading out to the back deck of the boat.

I take a deep breath before jumping in.
