Jasper's POV

I circled the wolf, feinting him every few seconds. Each time, he fell for my fake blows and prepared himself for the attack. A manic grin stretched my lips and the wolf shook with suppressed anger. I waited, knowing that the impact would come soon.

Sure enough, he charged a few moments later, blood falling from his jaw where I had torn off some skin. His sharp canines aimed for my shoulder, and shockingly, they actually made contact. I shot back with a howl of pain and he took the opportunity to attempt a blow to my stomach, which again, made contact. This time, I had allowed it to- I was trying to make him think that I was hurt, playing dead on the floor.

It worked like a charm, and he let down his guard down slightly. When his gaze faltered, I came up quickly and kicked his leg, hard. He fell to the floor with a shocked yelp, and I stood above him, grinning manically once more. Victorious.

The wolf whimpered, and we both knew the fight was over. He was completely under my mercy now.

Placing my paw on his neck, tight enough to constrict his breathing slightly but not tight enough to kill him, I took the time to look around the arena.

It was a vast place, somewhere that always left me in awe. It was sort of like an amphitheatre with the ascending levels of seating, seating which was just now filled with my enthusiastic pack.

They were kneeling over the railings, tense to see what was happening between their Alpha and the unlucky wolf. Those who had been too late to secure a seat near the front were trying to push forward, screaming like mental people.

The screaming. Shit, the screaming. It was going right through my head, almost making me forget about the Death Wish beneath me.

It was a moment later that I realized that the screaming had actually stopped, and it was only echoing in my head. There was something else, too. A girl's voice. A powerful voice.

JASPER! STOP!

The voice was so loud in my mind that it knocked me onto my back, the wind leaving my chest. It was like someone had just sat on my brain, slowly scratching it with a boiling hot needle, crushing it.

JASPER! I MEAN IT! YOU BETTER STOP!

Screams begin to sound again within my pack, but this time I knew it was real. I knew because the screams were filled with excitement.

Looking up again at my pack, I followed their gaze and my jaw dropped open in shock.

Violet?

She was in her human form looking beautiful and fiery.

She also looked angry as hell, and something inside me actually stirred in fear. Her eyes were set on me, and they were cold, filled with something that made my heart hurt.

Hatred.

My mate began to run towards me, and the sounds of my pack became louder. This had never happened before, and I was sure that they were thanking their lucky stars that something was happening other than boring old death.

The wolf shifted out from beneath me, but I barely even noticed. My eyes were fixed on my mate, my mate who held hatred in her eyes when she looked at me.

Finally she reached us, and for a moment just stood there staring at me as if she didn't even know me. That same look resided in her eyes, and I hung my head low. It was my fault. I had made my mate look at me like that.
