Canada (Matthew Williams) x Reader

Music flowed gently through the speaker in his kitchen. Matthew hummed along to the tune as he prepared the ingredients for his lunch with (Y/N). She had managed to free up some time on her schedule and had asked to have lunch together with him. Matthew smiled slightly as he recalled how happy she had sounded when he offered to cook lunch for her. He glanced over at the clock and began to speed up in his preparations in order to finish before her arrival. He finished placing the plates on the kitchen table as the doorbell rang and a surge of excitement and hope surged through him. He quickly ran a hand through his hair in an attempt to deal with his unruly curl and gave up with a soft sigh as the curl stubbornly bobbed above his head.

Matthew opened the door and smiled softly at (Y/N) "Hi." She looked up from her phone and sent him a gentle smile "Hey Matthew." He moved out of the way to allow her to entire his house and she eagerly entered to escape the cold "It's nice to see you again. We haven't had time to hang out for an entire two months." Matthew hummed in agreement and bit back a comment about her choosing to hang out with Alfred instead of him all the time. He shook his head and pushed away his negative thoughts to instead focus on (Y/N). She failed to notice the slight annoyance present on his face and her smile widened at the sight of the feast on the dinner table "You did a great job Matthew! It looks so good." "Thank you" he quietly replied, and made his way over to his chair while she copied his action. The two shared idle chatter as they both enjoyed the delicacies placed before them on the table.

A phone chimed and (Y/N) paused in her sentence to look down at the notification. She smiled happily and looked up at Matthew "Sorry. Can I just reply to this quickly? It seems important." Matthew quietly nodded and observed her from across the table as she texted back with a level of happiness that seemed foreign to him. He glanced down at the contact name and felt the familiar unpleasant feeling of nausea and disappointment at the name Alfred with a heart emoji next to his name. He knew the entire time that she preferred his brother. He knew that the girl he was in love with was in love with his brother and not him. Despite all that, he continued to try to impress her. He continued to hang out with her and said yes to everything she wanted, yet she remained in love with Alfred. He knew she only hung out with him because of convenience or boredom, but he didn't want to acknowledge it.

The sound of a message being sent jolted him out of his thoughts and he plastered on a fake concerned look to feign innocence "Is everything okay?" She seemed to hesitate as she looked over at him properly "Actually, something important came up. I have to go." He ignored the pain he felt at her lie and shifted to stand up "Do you need help with something? Or do you need to be driven somewhere?" She shook her head and stood up from the table with a gentle smile "No, I'm alright, but thank you for the offer. I appreciate it, really." She enveloped him in a quick hug and made her way over to the front door to gather her coat and other items "Matthew." "Yeah?" He quietly replied, fighting against the tears that threatened to come out at the sight of her leaving him for his brother. "Thank you for the food. It was wonderful" she stated, hand already on the doorknob "Let's do this again sometime." "Of course. I'm glad you enjoyed it" he replied, and sent her a small wave "Till next time." (Y/N) nodded and exited his house with a quick 'goodbye' and 'see you soon' directed towards him. Matthew absentmindedly locked the door and collapsed onto the couch.

Tears welled up in his eyes and he broke down. His emotions flowed out of him as he clutched tightly to the pillow next to him "Why is it always him? Why does everyone always like him more? Why does everyone always go to him? Why is it always Alfred and never Matthew?" He buried himself further into his pillow and let all his pain out "Why am I always the second choice? People forget me all the time, and when they remember me it's just as a side thought. No one checks up on me and asks how I'm doing. Even when I ask for help, people ignore me or forget about it right away. I thought at least (Y/N) would be different, but I was wrong. I can't believe I thought for a second that someone would care about me." His words died out as his cries grew harsher until he collapsed from exhaustion.

Notes:

Prompt: Second. He's second choice basically

Matthew is extra quiet in this because although he does like her, a part of him won't allow him to be his true self

I really played on the idea that Matthew is forgotten often

I hope you enjoyed this
