Chapter 188: The Demon King

Start from the beginning

"I see," I fake a smile. "So we were a family... What are you doing here?"

"I'm on my way to reunite with my husband in the lower tier of the Underworld. I've just stopped by to see my Soul Case Manager."

"Right then. You must be on your way now."

"Rong Xin!" She grabs my hand, holding it desperately. "You don't know how much I've wondered about you after you left Pingfan Village. No one told me anything. I didn't figure it out until I died that they did such a horrendous thing to you, forcing you to be sacrificed to a demon. Of course, you couldn't stay with us any longer. Did you really leave with your husband? Did you live a good life?"

Her trembling gaze wants me to say that I did leave with my husband, that I did live a good life. But I didn't have it in my heart to lie.

"Chun Mei, I don't remember. My past lives, past family members, past friends... Perhaps there were good times, but ever since I became a Soul Case Manager, I had to forego my memories in order to serve the souls of the Mortal Realm."

"I see... so you don't even remember me."

I squeeze her hand and say, "Even though I do not, I feel as though we were great friends and sisters. We probably fought about silly things and shared the same room. I think we really did love each other, right?"

Beaming, Chun Mei shows her pearly teeth. "We did, we did love each other a lot. I hope if fate allows, I will be your sister again."

"We'll have to see." I nod and bid her farewell with a relaxed grin.

I return to Ji Nian with his ceramic mug filled with coffee made black. I place the mug down on his desk, absentmindedly walking to mine. I sit down and take a sip of the hot brew.

"Ah, bitter!" I spat.

Ji Nian looks over at me. His emotionless expression couldn't care less what I was doing, but he asked anyway. "What's got you so lost?"

I quickly switched our mugs and sit back down. I was starting to become curious again. I wondered before what my lives were like. Did I have a family? Did I travel the world? Did I live happily with a beloved?

"Ji Nian, can you tell me just one little thing about my past? I'm just curious about one thing." Putting my palms together, I turn to him and plead.

He continues working, documenting notes and reviewing them. "Your files have been filed away long ago. Besides it's against the rules for me to tell you anything."

"Just one little thing?"

"Tsk. Why are you so curious after ten-thousand years? You shouldn't have become a Soul Case Manager if you are still going to chase after memories you wanted to forget."

"Memories I wanted to forget?"

That must mean something bad happened in one of my lives?

"Just keep up the good work you're doing. Soon they'll promote you to higher departments, and you won't have to live among us lowly laborers." I see he isn't going to tell me anything. Again, a very good Soul Case Manager with tight lips.
