Swiftkill lay under the bush watching the men. They made a camp dragging the bears body into a open area and starting a fire. They used the bear skin as a cover and parts of his body for food. Afterward they rested and didn't leave until the following day. Swiftkill stayed hidden for several hours more to ensure it was safe to move. Then slowly, limping heavily she moved towards where the men had been. Little remained of the bear, but she was able to find a few scraps of meat to eat. A metal cup still had water inside and she lapped it up thirstily. She looked at her leg. It was a mess but she could move so long as she didn't put much weight on it. Swiftkill knew she had to walk on and reunite with her pack.

Looking around there was little signs the wolves had been there. The smoke from the fire had made their scent all but disappear. Swiftkill decided they would have headed deeper into the forest. The men would eventually return to their village further downstream of the river. She would be safer walking through the forest.
