The rain fell heavier. Swiftkill looked out from under the rock. She knew the group would find shelter and food in the forest beyond on the other side. She had to make the decision. "We cross now!" She cried to the pack "follow my lead".

Swiftkill took the first step into the water. It was icy cold but she knew she had to venture further. She placed another paw forward. She could feel the stones under the river moving with the pace of the river. She felt a body next to her and Troy, holding a cub in his mouth, ran into the river, jumping into the deeper water. The cub immediately started yelping as the cold water enveloped his little body. "Come on" Troy cried out the side of his mouth "follow me". The rest of the pack then entered the water. The rain pelting down around them and they had to catch their breath as they started the swim. The freezing water penetrating their fur weighting them down further. Troy swimming strongly was almost half way over already. Swiftkill close behind. The young males followed the mothers and cubs ensuring they all stayed together.
