Chapter 2 - A Rocky Start
The next morning a thin frost covered the ground. It had been a cold night. Swiftkill thought about Troy. He had left hours before, travelling in the moonlight with the other scouts. She knew he was the best at his job and was the best forwarding protection for the pack. "It's time" she called to the other wolves "we leave now". Her hot breathe came out of her mouth like steam from a dragon in the icy air. The other wolves all rose to their feet. They stretched and yawned. Mothers nudged their cubs, while the young males strutted about ready for the challenges ahead.
Swiftkill led the pack around the rocks from the waterfall which had provided their shelter to the open mountainside. The sun shone down while a few light clouds hung around the tops of the snow covered caps of the tallest mountains. The waterfall turned into a river which ran into the valley below. A valley that was covered in a thick forest which looked like a green carpet. A forest that provided shelter and food for the winter.
However before the forest lay the open rocks of the mountainside. Some were slippy, some were sharp but all were unstable. The rocks moved with the weather. One wrong step could cause an avalanche. The wolves knew this and rather than run across they took each step carefully, aware of the risks to themselves and the pack. Swiftkill, as ever, ventured first. She knew the mountain pass and was experienced over the rocks. She helped the mothers and cubs and ensured the young males were kept in line.
