Chapter Eight

Jason was back in Athens. Even as he, along with Vanessa and Amy, stepped through customs in the airport and into Athens, he could still hardly believe it. It had only been a few months since he had last been to this city, when he had come on a school trip during spring break, but it honestly felt like a life time. And for good reason: this was where everything had started for him. Where his entire life had been flipped upside down and he had been thrust into a world he could never have imagined existed; and one he desperately wished wasn't real.

Nothing had changed. Or at least the airport hadn't. It still looked like it had when he had come through here with nearly thirty other students from his school. He hadn't seen what the city itself looked like though, and to be honest he was a little afraid to. That school trip had ended in disaster, and due to two Gods fighting it out in the middle of the streets of the city, much had been destroyed and many people had been killed. It had only been a few months, so Jason didn't know if everything was back to normal yet, or if they were still rebuilding.

He was also afraid to find out because he had actually caused some of that damage himself, and he had half expected to get stopped at customs and arrested. It was mostly a hollow fear though, as his involvement in the destruction was only known by certain and very specific groups. To the world at large it had just been a freak storm that hit the city out of the blue, and they would never know the truth. Hell, they probably wouldn't even believe it had they been told.

Actually, now that Jason pushed his fake passport back into his bag, he realized that it was a miracle that they had even gotten through customs at all. His irrational fear aside, he and Amy were still wanted criminals in the eyes of the Orders and organizations the world over. There should have been some kind welcoming party for them, given the fact that the Egyptian Order had seen through their fake passports and had them followed. And that was a small and powerless Order. The Greek Order was supposed to be even stronger than the American one, which had made Jason's life back home a living hell.

Jason wasn't the only one who seemed to be thinking this thought, and as they walked towards the doors leading out towards the city, he looked to Amy and found her eyes darting from left to right. She scanned their surroundings with all of her concentration and a frown was beginning to grow larger and larger on her face.

Vanessa, on the other hand, didn't seem to be too worried. Her eyes moved about the area like Amy's did, but there was a wide smile on her face and she bounced on her heels like a small child. She was excited to be in Greece, and Jason was a little peeved about that. Why did she get to have such a great time? This place was full of nothing but bad memories for him.

“This is so cool!” Vanessa exclaimed and jumped at Jason, grabbing his hand and holding tightly. “First Egypt, and now Athens! You get to go to the best places, Jason!”

“I don't... I don't want to be here..” he replied as they continued to walk through the airport and neared the doors.

Vanessa looked up at him and tilted her head, a curious expression painting her features. “Why not? You told me you loved Greek history, so you should be stoked to be here! Come on, let's go to the Parthenon! We'll do the whole tourist thing!”

“We're not here as tourists!” Amy barked. She walked on Jason's other side and hadn't spoken a word since they had left Egypt earlier. Even on the plane she had been quiet, and simply closed her eyes and pretended to sleep the entire time. “We're here for one reason, and one reason only. There will be no visiting ancient sites! There will be no wandering the city or exploring the countrysides! And there will be no drawing attention to us! If the Order of the Olive Tree learns we're here, they will come to kill us!”
