Chapter Eleven

The vision—or hallucination—from the previous night haunted Jason's mind throughout the next day and even the entire week. Nothing he did managed to purge it from his brain and whenever he had any kind of down time he couldn't help but go over it again and again. Having free time was pretty rare though, so it didn't happen that often; not that it made it any better. Amelia had him running around with her during and after school and Katharyn was running him ragged during all the other times of the day.

At first Jason hated the idea of having to work out and exercise every day; it made him tired, he had trouble focusing at school or getting up early in the morning, and every inch of his body hurt. But after the first few days things began to change, the biggest being his body adjusting to it and he felt better the next day instead of feeling like crap. It also didn't hurt that the more he threw himself into the training the less he saw that vision.

To make matters worse, school was beginning to wind down and instead of actual lessons it seemed that most classes were doing review of all the curriculum they learned throughout the year. Not only that but exams were looming ahead of them and Jason was beginning to realize just how unprepared he was for them. First his 'accident' in Greece and then all the crazy stuff that had happened because of it had really thrown him off, and he was struggling just to keep his head above water. If things kept up the way they were he might actually be forced to retake the eleventh grade; and that was something he didn't want. His sister would roast him alive if that happened.

The training wasn't helping either. Even though he hated studying he knew that if he didn't do it he would be in serious trouble; but it was hard to get into any kind of rhythm when his nights no longer belonged to him. He thought about bringing that up with Amelia, but that straight A's student who had never so much as gotten a bad mark on her homework wouldn't understand. Heck, she was probably juggling everything that Jason was and still managing to keep on top of her studies at the exact same time.

The first week of his training was coming to an end and Katharyn was going to put his hard work to the test with one stipulation: if he couldn't prove that he had made progress then she would refuse to train him any further. Because of this he was actually feeling a little nervous the morning of the final day of the seven day trial period; which was a little odd. Sure, he hated the training and the feeling of always being sore and tired afterwards, but maybe deep down he knew that without it he would never stand a chance in a fight against the other Slayer. Then again, he still believed that doing stretches and pushups was not going to help him at all.

The morning was bright, unbearably hot, and Jason had woken up on the wrong side of the bed. He wished he could have just continued to lay there in his comfy bed, with his eyes closed and the wish that the day would just end without him ever having to move a muscle, but his mother refused to let that happen. No sooner had she called him for breakfast did she kick in his door and pull his blankets off of him, forcing him to roll over into a fetal position and whimper pathetically.

Things didn't get any better after that. Susan was pretending that he either didn't exist or had died, and he was sure she would like to put him in the grave herself. She could try. As much as he didn't really like using his powers, he at least wanted to put on a show in front of her in the hopes that she would leave him alone for the rest of their lives. But he couldn't risk it. She already thought he was a freak and he really didn't need to give her proof.
