(The summer before the start of high school.)
"This is ridiculous!" I heard Tasha scream in her bedroom as I was entering their house.
"What happened?" I asked Alec who was sprawled on the sofa watching some lame comedy show.
He shrugged, not sparing me a glance. "I bet mom's probably giving her another hard time. Or...she's giving mom another hard time."
"I'm telling you, you can't go." Tasha's mom walked down the stairs, not noticing me yet.
"But everyone's coming!" I heard Tasha's heavy footsteps follow her mom downstairs. "I want to go to Jamie's party."
"Why can't you just hang out here? Besides-," Her mom finally noticed me standing on their living room and immediately smiled. "Oh, hi, Cole! How are you?"
"I'm cool. What's going on?" I frowned.
She sighed and was about to answer when Tasha dashed to my side answering for her. "I want to go to Jamie's party tonight and she won't let me. You want to go too, right?"
"Uh..." Honestly, I wasn't interested at Jamie's party at all. All I want to do for the last days of our summer vacation before high school finally starts is just to hang out with Tasha. But if she wants to go, then that's fine with me. "That's f-"
"You see?" Her mom cut me off, sensing my hesitation. "Cole doesn't want to go. You two can just hang out here. I'll even buy you pizza and ice cream."
The sound of pizza and ice cream made me smile and I knew it made Tasha hesitate too. She looked at me for a second and I tried not to smile too much. After a while, she finally sighed in defeat.
"I hate how you can always bribe me with those." She muttered to her mother.
"Perfect." her mom beamed. "Now, go do whatever teenagers now a days do and I'll get your ice cream and pizza."
Tasha rolled her eyes as she made her way back to her room. "Teenagers now a days go to parties."
"I want some pizza and ice cream too!" Alec said.
