Piece By Piece (GMW Fanfic)

Part 17: Maya

Riley looks up to her dad with a sad smile, expecting anapology of sorts, or an explanation, or anything.

Cory just smiles sadly then says to her, "I think I'd like to have a word with your mother, privately"
He grabs Topanga by the hand and leads her to their room.

Once they leave, the silence turns from comfortable to awkward.
"So...how's life?" I say, trying to break the ice.
Everyone laughs then we all start talking again.

But out of the corner of my eye, I see Riley trying to hold back her tears. I walk over and stop right in front of her.
"Everything's going to be okay" I say.
She looks me straight in the eye.
Then we pull each other into the tightest hug anyone could give.

"I really missed you Peaches"
"I missed you too Riles"
"Promise me you'll never do that again"
"I promise"

We pull back, and we smile.
Then we randomly start laughing.
It's just the weirdest thing ever, our friendship.

"Thunder" she says, holding out her hand.
"Lightning" I say, making my hand match hers.
"Forever"

I wake up and am surprised to find myself wrapped up in a comforter, and that's when I remember...I'm home.

I get up and walk into the living room to eat breakfast.
Topanga and Cory are already there.
Cory smiles at me when I enter the room.

"Maya, can I have a sec?" he asks.
"Sure" I say.

I sit down beside him and the first thing he does is wrap me in a hug.
"I'm sorry" he says.
"For what?" I ask.
He lifts my head then says, "For the things I said"
I sigh then look down to the floor.

Then he starts to speak again,
"Sometimes when people are in a bad mood, or when they're in a bad state of mind, they say things they don't really mean. The things I said to Riley, I never meant that. I think I said those because..."
He trails off.

I look back up at him, expecting him to continue.
He sighs before saying, "Because you've basically become my second daughter. I don't know what I would've done if you never came back. I guess I was just trying to console myself"

I give him a genuine smile, then it's my turn to wrap him in a hug.

"All is forgiven"

Now we've gotten Maya home.
